Scriptures for Mother's Day

Wendy Dibble-Lohr
One of the nicest cards I ever received was homemade. My friend had taken several pieces of card stock, folded them in half and stapled them at the top to form a booklet. She cut out pieces from decorative papers and glued them to each page. She then printed out bible verses and glued them in. The result was a simple, heartfelt card that showed not only the time, but also the thoughtfulness put into it. Here are my 'top 10' scriptures (in no particular order) for Mother's Day. Feel free to use these in your own cards, letters or notes for the special Mom in your life.

Proverbs 31
".....28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."

This scripture comes to mind first when I think of scriptures about mothers, wives or women in general. The definition of the virtuous woman, note that she is a mother, a wife, and she works 'outside the home'.

Isaiah 40:11
"11He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. "

Proverbs 31

The 'Good Shepherd' tends to us, a leads us where we should go, and teaches us how we should live.

Philippians 4:13
"13I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

Between cleaning, cooking, kissing boo-boos and 3am feedings, you wonder how you can possibly make it through the day. We are promised strength for our day in this scripture.

Philippians 4:19
"19But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."

Moms spend so much time taking care of the needs of others that we sometimes find ourselves wondering 'What about me?'

2 Timothy 1:5
"5When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also."

In Paul's letter to Timothy, he recalls the faith that Timothy's Grandmother and Mother passed on to him. A mother has powerful influence over her children's beliefs and spiritual life.

Isaiah 49 14-16
"14But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me. 15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. 16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me. "
Gods remembrance of his people is likened to a mothers remembrance and compassion that she has for her child.

Proverbs 22:6
"6Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."

Mothers are charged with the responsibility to train a child, with the promise that even though the may seem to turn away, they will come back to it.

Titus 2:3-5
"3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. "

Mothers teaching mothers. The older women are to teach the younger how to be good mothers and wives.

Isaiah 49:25
"25But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children."

Gods promise to his people to protect them and their children.

Psalms 103:17-19
"17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; 18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. 19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. "

Another promise to Gods people. If they keep his covenant they will be protected through the generations.

I hope these scriptures are helpful as you prepare to honor your own mother on Mothers Day.
Exodus 20:12 12Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

All scripture references from The Holy Bible, King James Version.
