Scrubs Guest Stars - Season Two

Joshua Cook
In my last article, "Scrubs Guest Stars - Season One", I covered four of the more notable guest spots from the first season of the hit NBC medical comedy Scrubs. In this article, we will now move my pop culture expertise (I did pass the tests for VH1's reality game show World Series of Pop Culture, after all) to season two of Scrubs. With an impressive list to choose from - eleven major-minor guest stars (not counting cameos) - it was actually a little difficult to cut the list down to just a few. Since I like all of my readers so much, I suffered through that torture, and came up with the best guest stars from season two of Scrubs. The list is, again, in order of appearance, with a complete, eleven person listing at the end of the article.

J.D.'s older brother, Dan Dorian, is a family member that fans of Scrubs cannot forget. Unlike J.D., Dan still lives with his mother in their hometown, works in a local bar, and is just basically an all around slacker. With all that being said, somehow Dr. Elliot Reid, J.D.'s on again - off again girlfriend, found some part of that attractive, and had a short-lived fling with Dan. The person responsible for bringing Dan Dorian to life on NBC's Scrubs is Tom Cavanagh. Tom Cavanagh is most noted for having the starring role in Ed, which was another NBC show that ran for a total of four years. Most recently, Tom Cavanagh was seen in the CBS dramedy, Love Monkey, which CBS picked up for eight episodes, but only ran three. VH1 eventually bought the rights to air all eight episodes, and did so in mid-2006.

Heather Locklear popped into Scrubs' Sacred Heart Hospital in season two of the show. The pharmaceutical rep Julie Keaton was beautiful (obviously, it's Heather Locklear) and lusted after by every man working at Sacred Heart Hospital. It was only Dr. Cox that had any form of a relationship with her, which lasted less than one full episode, thanks to the return of his wife/ex wife, Jordan. Heather Locklear was a television veteran well before her stint on NBC's Scrubs. Working in television since the 70's, Heather Locklear has adorned many a persona for our entertainment. Will any of us forget Amanda Woodward, that bit- woman with attitude, from Melrose Place for six years? And you can't talk about Heather Locklear without bringing up Sammy Jo, from Dynasty. Sammy Jo was another woman with attitude from a prime-time soap opera. Heather has played nicer roles - SpinCity and Two and a Half Men, for example.

We also found out Turk had a brother who was wealthy and successful, in season two of Scrubs. Played by D.L. Hughley, Kevin Turk came for an unexpected visit when his wife packed up the children and left him. Turk ended up cheering Kevin up in perfect Scrubs fashion... An all night alcohol bender at a local bar! As far as D.L. Hughley goes, he has been all over the place in recent years. In 1997, he was featured in Spike Lee's The Original Kings of Comedy, which was a hugely successful stand-up comedy tour and spawned the likes of The Original Queens of Comedy and The Blue Collar Comedy Tour. After that, D.L. Hughley took movie and television roles, including The Hughleys, which ran for a run of four years between two stations (ABC and UPN). Most recently he was seen in yet another NBC show, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which was cancelled after one season due to poor ratings.

Saving the best for last, at least in this author's opinion, we come up to Ryan Reynolds, who played J.D. and Turk's frat brother from college, Spence. Spence became an investment banker and changed J.D.'s life in college by telling him to use hair products. Played by Ryan Reynolds, this role was hilarious. Thanks to perfecting his comedy persona in television shows like Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place, in which he played Berg (short for Michael Leslie Bergan), and hit movies like National Lampoon's Van Wilder, he just stepped up and owned the role of Spence in season two of Scrubs.
