Scrubs: Life at Sacred Heart

Jamie Williams
In this hilarious spoof-like comedy surrounding the lives of Sacred Heart employee's, we can't help but ask ourselves; "where is this hospital and how do I sign up!" From the light bantering to the attention-grabbing plots, we are left wishing we too were a part of the Sacred Heart family. Zach Braff takes the leading role in Scrubs as JD, an intelligent but otherwise over-sensitive medical intern. In the beginning, JD shares an apartment with his best fried and co-worker, Turk, played by Donald Faison. Their antics are show-stopping hilarious as they struggle through the ups and downs of modern life and the ever-changing flow of Sacred Heart. JD and Turk share an apartment where they own a dog victimized by Taxidermy; they call him Rowdy. It is virtually impossible not to feel compelled to understand the relationship between "Bambi" and his "chocolate bear."

Speaking of Bambi, Carla (played by Judy Reyes), is a very clever nurse stuck between the bootstraps of JD and Turk's friendship. In the beginning, she strikes up a friendship with JD and starts to refer to him as "Bambi." As no one else at Sacred Heart calls JD by this name, it is somewhat of a connection between the two. Carla is both witty and charming as she always finds herself in quite the predicament. She is generally always the first to offer advice, whether good or bad. Unfortunately, it is this same advice that usually gets her in a quandary with her fellow friends. Though she is now married to the comical Chris Turk, she appears trapped in a love triangle with John C. McGinley, widely known at Sacred Heart as Dr. Cox.

Dr. Cox is one of the most compelling characters as his one-liners are almost always guaranteed to bring you to tears. As the words seem to just flow out of his mouth, we are left with the impression that Dr. Cox is the lead-man, head honcho, and superior of all superior. But there is another side to the infamous Dr. Cox, the more sensitive side. When he had learned that his former wife had slept with JD, he was very nonchalant about it, realizing that JD was not really at fault as he didn't know who she really was. His relationship with JD is quite impressionable. Dr. Cox has made many "pet names" for the crew at Sacred Heart including "newbie" for JD, "Barbie" for Elliot, and the various women names he has also chosen for JD. Dr. Cox finds out in Season Two that his ex wife, played by Christa Miller, is very obviously pregnant as she comes strutting into the hospital after a short break. This complicates things for Dr. Cox as he is torn between his ex wife slash current lover, and the woman of his dreams, Carla.

Elliot Reid, played by Sarah Chalke, appears slightly neurotic with a tendency to show signs of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. With the bitter taste of an overbearing mother on her lips and the need to always "fit in," we almost feel a sense of compassion towards her. Elliot gets caught up in quite a few sour love affairs and makes some very poor choices, but she always seems to pick herself up and go at it again. In one particular episode, JD and Elliot decide to give love a shot and end up sleeping together, several times. Elliot is quick to move on with her life, but JD is always drawn to her, unsure of whether he has true feelings for her, or if it is the utter loneliness that consumes him. After countless boyfriends and impractical relationships, Elliot finds peace in her inner self and transfers to a different hospital. However, we can always watch her overanxious commentary at Sacred Heart as she is always compelled to come back to her friends.

There have been many guest stars on Scrubs including, but not limited to, Heather Locklear, Brendan Fraser, John Ritter, and Dick Van Dyke. Scrubs ran its first episode on October 2, 2001 and will air the finale of Season Six on May 17, 2007. During the first season, Scrubs was nominated for two Emmy Awards and a People's Choice Award. Scrubs have already received a total of 10 Emmy nominations and the series won an Emmy for Multi-camera Picture Editing. Through the superb cast and crew, the audience is permanently fixated on Sacred Heart.

Other cast and crew that deserve honorable recognition include:

Executive Producer & Creator: Bill Lawrence

Executive Producers: Bill Callahan, Garrett Donnovan, Neil Goldman, Tad Quill, Eric Weinberg and Tim Hobert.

Ken Jenkins: Dr. Bob Kelso

Neil Flynn: the Janitor

Robert Maschio: Dr. Todd Quinlan

Aloma Wright: Nurse Laverne Roberts

Sam Lloyd: Ted Buckland (the hospital attorney)

It is quite impressing that Scrubs has made it this far. As they say, "all good things must come to an end," Scrubs is no exception to this rule. Scrubs is scheduled to air Season Seven, the last season, in the Fall of 2007. Sacred Heart, you have brought much joy and laughter into the homes of millions of people, and you will be sorely missed.
