Scuba Dive Insurance for Your Protection

Cara Surdi
Scuba dive insurance is a form of financial protection designed specifically for persons who participate or instruct in the sport of scuba diving. Many of the regular insurance policies will not cover accidents and injuries, which occur due to scuba diving because it is considered a "high risk" sport. Scuba dive insurance will cover the gap left by the regular insurance companies. Scuba dive insurance is the product of a concerned group of individuals, which felt there was a need to provide protection for individuals involved in the performance or instruction of high-risk sports. These individuals are exposed to the possibility of lawsuits that involve accusations of negligence.

Scuba dive insurance will cover diving accidents, death, and disability. The insurance companies, which provide scuba dive insurance, also provide coverage for diving instructors with what is called a "professional liability policy". They carry insurance that covers dive shops and a policy, which covers divers while they are in the water.

The scuba dive insurance plans can be purchased for individuals or as a family plan. These plans include medical coverage, travel protection that covers you for multiple diving trips, and your diving equipment. Additional coverage generally includes accidental death, loss of a limb or other body part, and paralysis. A scuba dive insurance plan will also pay to ship your remains home for burial.

Some policies may have limits on how deep you may dive and allow you to still retain your scuba dive insurance coverage. They may also cover injuries which are not directly related to diving but which might occur on your scuba diving adventure. The scuba dive insurance policy may require you to be a certified diver in order to be covered and other policies may be willing to cover the beginner.

The medical portion of you scuba dive insurance will cover all the usual medical costs involved with treatment in the case of a dive injury. They may request pre-authorization for some procedures. Any condition that occurs within six months prior to your scuba diving excursion, if it contributes to a medical problem during your dive, may not be covered.

The professional liability insurance covers events that happened in the past as long as the same insurance company had continuously covered the individual. It covers all legal claims against the individual as well as lawyer fees. One stipulation is that the insured must inform the scuba dive insurance company of any incident that may result in a legal action at the time the event takes place. Any event that takes place outside the limits set by the policy, such as the depth of the dive or type of breathing apparatus used, may exclude that event from coverage.
Scuba dive insurance should be considered to cover yourself and your family, not only if you are a beginner but also as a certified diver. Protection of your health and your family is as important as safety when you are scuba diving
