Scuba Diving Equipment: Everything You Need to Know

Diving in the ocean is something great that most people would love to experience. Before you go, there are a few essential pieces of scuba diving equipment that you will need to familiarize yourself with. This article will share with you everything you need to know before going off on an amazing new adventure.

Mask

The mask is an essential piece of scuba diving equipment. Without it, you would not be able to see underwater. There are many different types of face masks. The simplest of them is a set of goggles that merely cover the eyes. More advanced face masks cover the full face and come with built in radio equipment that allows you to communicate with others during your dive.

Scuba Tank/Rebreather

The tank is one of the most important pieces of scuba diving equipment. Unless you're a fish, you won't be able to stay underwater for very long without a scuba tank. These tanks supply you with compressed air allowing you to breathe during your dive.

A more expensive alternative to tanks is the rebreather. This compact device reuses the air that you breathe underwater. It disposes of the poisonous carbon dioxide, while renewing the amount of oxygen in the air.

Thermal Suit

Another essential piece of scuba diving equipment is the thermal suit. There are two main types of suits: wet and dry. Wet suits are used in rather warm waters to preserve your body heat by trapping a thin later of water against your skin. Dry suits are used in colder water and are completely sealed to keep water from touching the skin.

Both types of suits also help to protect you from underwater hazards. Rough surfaces like corral can cause cuts if they are rubbed against. The thermal suits apply enough pressure to prevent small cuts from bleeding while underwater.

Weighted Plates

If you attempt to dive without weighted plates, you probably won't be able to go very deep. Your body is naturally buoyant. Different amounts of weighted plates allow you to adjust your depth while you are diving.

Propulsion Device

The last piece of essential scuba diving equipment is a propulsion device. Somewhere, you may have seen scuba divers wearing fins to move around underwater. If you go on extended dives, you may tire yourself out. If this happens, you may consider investing in a diving motor. A diving motor is an electric device that propels you through the water. There is no need for constant kicking, as you can simply hold on to the motor to get around.

Diving underwater is a fun experience. Now that you know all about the important pieces of scuba diving equipment, you're one step closer to witnessing the dazzling array of underwater sea creatures. Have fun, and watch out for those pesky sharks.
