Scuba Diving Lessons in New York City

Regina Sass
There is some great scuba diving to be done in New York City and the area. Just think about it. Think of the hundreds of years of maritime history in New York. From the time of the Dutch and French explorers of the 1600's there have been ships that have sank never to be recovered. Who knows what kind of treasure you will uncover. Of course you cannot just go and do it. You need lessons. You need to do it the right way. You need to do it with a buddy. You need to be certified. If you are looking for something different to do this summer, a new skill to learn that you can use when you go on vacation to many other parts of the country and even the world, then give these a look. Give them a try. There is a beauty under the sea that you will never see in any other environment anywhere else.

In most cases the lessons will cost less than $300. The equipment can cost a good bit, but in most cases you can rent the most expensive until you decide if this is really your idea of a great time. One thing that is very important is to find a scuba-diving instructor who you feel comfortable with. You will need to be relaxed and comfortable and then you will have the time of your life.

Village Divers http://www.villagedivers.com/ is located in Greenwich Village, New York and they have small size classes and personal lessons. You start out getting used to the equipment in a pool and they have a list of places to do diving from Brooklyn, New York all the way out to Montauk Point. They also have scuba-diving trips scheduled to other ports of call throughout the year. And in winter they have ice diving expeditions.

Adventure Scuba http://adventurescubany.com/ is located up town in Yorkville and you can go snorkeling as well as scuba diving. You can get your scuba-diving certificate in a weekend course. You will need to make a weekend available to go on a check out dive trip after you have completed the course.

Empire Divers is on the Upper East Side http://www.empiredivers.com/html/openwater.html
They have a junior program for children 10-14 and the scuba-diving course is a combination of home study, classroom, pool practice and the weekend getaway certification trip. They also sponsor trips to exotic ports of call all year long. You could be starting a brand-new obsession. It is not hard to do.

If you are out on Long Island, try Danny's Dive Shop in Baldwin http://www.dannysdiveshop.com/
The scuba-diving course here consists of five classroom and five pool lessons before you hit the open water. They have specialty classes and advanced classes available. They also sell and more importantly repair all scuba diving equipment including the wet suits.
