What to expect in equipment:
The summer temperatures can get as high as 75 degrees in Southeast Alaska. When snorkeling, the surface water will stay relatively warm. Snorkelers typically wear a wetsuit which provides enough warmth for the surface waters.
In the winter and summer, divers wear a complete drysuit, gloves, and boots. In the winter, it is advised to wear a warm under layer such as long underwear or the such. Warm socks are essential as well. It takes a while to suit up in the winter and it can be cumbersome maneuvering around, but once in the water, the extra layers and protection are definitely needed and will keep the diver alive.
What to expect in visibility:
There is more plant life and algae growth in the summer. Large kelp forests tower over the sea floor covered in sea grass. On really warm days, the algae causes low visibility and the waters can be murky and dark.
In the winter months, visibility is the best on extremely cold days. The water is crystal clear. When dressed warm and wearing the proper gear, the average diver shouldn't let the cold water be a deterrence from diving. Just remember to be smart, have a buddy, and double check all of your gear.
What to expect in sea life:
Most of the diving in Southeast Alaska is done between 30 to 40 feet deep. This is where most of the sea and plant life can be seen. Divers and snorkelers typically view sea stars of various colors and form, urchins, sea cucumbers, crustaceans, jellyfish, and varieties of fish. It is not uncommon to see sea lions from time to time as well. The sea floor is typically sandy or rocky. A myriad of colors can be seen ranging from orange, to pink, to light green. In the summer, vast kelp forests and grassy areas are filled with sea life. The sea and plant life of Southeast Alaska is typical of what can be seen in the Puget Sound, but with more fish.
Numerous diving packages are available in Southeast Alaska and typically include the cost of the equipment rental, as well as transportation to the diving spot. With that said, diving packages are available for offshore diving and open water diving. Most diving shops offer other amenities too such as diving classes from professional dive masters, underwater camera rentals, and diving equipment sales. If planning a trip to Southeast Alaska, consider taking a diving or snorkeling excursion. There is a whole new world to be explored under the waters of Southeast Alaska.
