Scully Welding Supply Explodes into Flames

Many Explosions Heard from Miles, Video Caught on IPhone

Scully welding, is a place I have passed many times. With ominous warnings posted on the front no smoking etc., it always made me a little leery, wondering just how safe it was. I guess my feelings were right because today explosions soared through Collingdale in Delaware County PA.

I had sent my daughter to Collingdale Deli today to get our lunch meat. Just a typical errand, one would think. Turned out to be yet another "wow, one or two more minutes and things would have been different" moments. Just minutes after leaving the deli, and turning down Oak Avenue from MacDade Blvd., explosions were heard. By the time she got to our house the sirens were wailing, heard from Clifton Heights the next town over. As she pulled into our driveway, my daughter received a text from her friend at the deli Tim D. , saying there was an explosion and they were evacuating.

On CBS news, they reported evacuations for a quarter mile as firefighters fought this tremendous fire and the dangers associated with where it was located, a propane building. Mike Bove, owner of Mikes Auto Body and Towing which is located just past Macdade and Ashland Ave. in Glenolden stated that his area was evacuated as well, I do believe his shop falls within that quarter of a mile.

Hours later the fire was still unstable because the heat and fire could have made more propane and oxygen tanks blow. Evacuees were brought to the Folcroft Fire Company many having to watch their very own street on the TV wondering just how close the fire will get to their homes. Even news reporters could not get anywhere near the blast as firefighters safely blocked off the evacuated area.

There were five people injured, one person critically injured at count last evening. I will update on this story as the facts come in.

Kathy, to answer your question: That business has been there for many years and a lot of the businesses and homes were built around Scully's. Scully's was not implanted in that environment. So the bigger question might be, why were other buildings built so close?

I'm glad that your daughter is okay, and I hope everyone who was hurt will also be okay. Why was this place allowed to conduct business so close to other businesses and homes? That just seems wrong.
