Sea Freight: An Economical Option for Bulk Shipping

Josh Ryan
Fast shipping is a necessity for many companies, especially when considering perishable items, but if that's not an issue then sea freight is much more inexpensive. Waiting is almost alien in our world, but if you want to save money then you'll make a few sacrifices, and shipping sea freight is definitely the least costly shipment option.

Very heavy, bulky items are some of the best to use sea freight for. Flying them is definitely not inexpensive, and it's sometimes not even an option, depending on the item. A ship has no problem with hauling big loads and sea freight will handle more volume than any other type of shipment. Sea freight is also good if you just have a big shipment of goods going from country to country.

When you're considering sea freight, look closely at the service level agreement. Usually you'll be dealing with more than one company over the course of the shipment and you need to know who will be responsible for what. It is quite common for companies to contract with partners from other countries. Almost any time you ship by sea you're using this type of agreement. All you're concerned about is that the sea freight company you chose will get your goods where they need to go.

Always talk about the price for sea freight before you agree to anything. Some shipping companies go by weight and others by volume. The bigger a company, the more options you're bound to have, as they can package things by category. The large containers you see at shipyards are the means of transportation for most sea freight. Make sure you're not paying for a whole container if you're not using up the whole thing.

Timing is never as much of an issue with sea freight as it is with other shipping methods, but it's always best to have an understanding about when the sea freight company will get your stuff delivered. Make sure you can avoid as many delays as possible since sea freight already takes weeks anyway. Also be sure they're properly licensed for the port they're going to so you don't have to find out they made it but could land.

If you're interested in saving money, especially for large or numerous shipments, then sea freight is a viable option. Sea freight is much more risky, so you need to know your shipping service. Communicate all the details as clearly as possible to eliminate careless or avoidable mistakes. If it works out well, then you have a more affordable shipping option to depend on.
