Sea-Tac Airport Brings Back Christmas Trees

Rabbi Promises Not to Sue

Brian Tubbs
Sea-Tac Airport once again has Christmas trees with ornaments and decorations. Earlier, a Jewish rabbi had asked to put a menorah up at Sea-Tac Airport along with the Christmas trees. When the airport refused, the rabbi threatened to sue. The trees came down, and a controversy blew up. Now, the rabbi has agreed not to pursue litigation at this time against Sea-Tac Airport if the trees remain, and Sea-Tac has brought the trees back out.

This unusual turn of events brings to a close a contentious standoff that is playing out in many parts of the country. Not only does it raise questions as to how and whether public places can celebrate or acknowledge Christmas, it brings to mind how even the more secular symbols of Christmas should be understood.

Look for this story to develop further in the months ahead as new policies are decided for holiday celebrations. And look for similar controversies to continue to play out in other parts of the country.
