Seabiscuit, Classic Horse Lover's Movie: A Review

Alexandra Morgan
Whether horse racing season is gearing up, has ended, or is in full swing, Seabiscuit (Jeff Bridges and Tobey Maguire), is a great film choice for horse lovers and racing connoisseurs alike. So, why wait for horse racing season, why not get into the spirit any time of the year with a home viewing of the now classic horse film, Seabiscuit?

A Movie for Horse Lovers to Keep You in the Horse Racing Spirit Year 'Round: Seabiscuit

This 2003 film couldn't be more appropriate right now given our current economic climate. Seabiscuit, starring Tobey Maguire as jockey Red Pollard, Chris Cooper as trainer Tom Smith, and Jeff Bridges as owner Charles Howard, tells the true story of an underestimated underdog horse, jockey, and trainer whose lives were all fated to intertwine in horseracing victory.

When the Depression hit, putting thousands upon thousands out of business and on the streets, some, such as Charles Howard, turned to horse racing to lift the spirits and earn some much needed money. Charles Howard, saw something in unconventional trainer Tom Smith and trusted his judgment on the purchase of a small, unwanted, and discarded horse named Seabiscuit. While Tom Smith knew that Seabiscuit was a diamond in the rough, it would take expert training to get this horse to remember that he was born to run and win, and the perfect pairing of a jockey to match Seabiscuit's temperament, which could only be found in jockey Red Pollard. Once these four lonely souls found each other, the horse racing community and the nation was in for a wild ride. Seabiscuit's subsequent wins served to lift morale and bring hope to a nation struggling through bleak times.

If you haven't seen Seabiscuit yet, I highly recommend it; not only is it a classic horse lover's movie, but it certainly gives a closer look at what drives and sustains the human spirit.

Would have been more helpful if you had written just a bit more

I think this is a good suggestion. In fact, I'm kind of sorry I didn't get a copy of the book, as I saw two at Goodwill in the last 48 hours!

I agree it's a nice story and overall good movie (much better than the awful original), but it still has a few too many inaccuracies for the true horse racing fan (read the book - much more factual). For example, War Admiral did not tower over the Biscuit - they both were 15.3 HH, which is around 63" to the shoulder. Try Ruffian or Dreamer for other horse racing flicks, too. Good review.
