Seal Beach: Southern California Travel

Beachside Town

One of my favorite places to go for a evening walk is Seal Beach. I am a California native of 54 years. I regularly enjoy the stroll. To see the best of it park at the end of Main Street and stroll down to the pier. There are some great restaurants and shops along the way. Not to mention that everyone is friendly. You will see a lot of locals. There are many pubs along the stretch to the pier. You can't help to notice that they are usually packed. It doesn't have to be a summer night either. It seems to be that way all the time. Many times there seems to be standing room only in the pubs. But from the sound of it all, everyone is having a good time.

Ages are from the young to the old. Many folks walk their dogs. I have even seen a woman walking her cat. You will see bowls of water outside the local businesses for pets if they need to stop and drink.

The best time to go is at sunset. Just as the sun is going down you can see the Long Beach skyline. What a beautiful sight that is. Bring your camera for a great picture. Yes, there are folks fishing along the pier. At the end of the pier is Ruby's restaurant which seems to always pull in a good crowd. Better yet, if you can be there when the moon is full, it illuminates a path on the water. I have seen the sun going down on the west side and the full moon rising on the east. What a panorama view that was!

If your lucky, you can see some seal swimming along the pier trying to catch fish for their dinner. You will see them by the fluorescent blue glow they put out on the water. It looks really amazing to see. If you look to the south you can see Huntington Beach. Did I mention it is good exercise too? You really don't feel like your doing anything healthy as you take in all the sights along the way! Back down Main street,it appears so quaint and welcoming. There is this sort of charm that is hard to describe.

You can take in the ocean breeze and enjoy a fresh walk while enjoying the views. You can always grab a bite to eat or a beer or even do a little shopping! You may want to sit on a bench and people watch. Sometimes you will find some locals playing music outside their business. It gives you a sense of the down home touch. It will surely put a smile on your face. It is a small beach town so it isn't fast paced. You can dress up. I have seen people dress up. Beach casual is usually the way to go. You do have to wear shoes (flip flops) to get in a restaurant. Many of the restaurants have the outdoor bistro type settings.

Some facts of the city are that in 2005 it celebrated its 90th anniversary. Also, there is the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge. Seal Beach is also home to the Naval Weapons Station. The police have a sub office at the front of the pier. I have never seen any crime or problem since I have been going there.

I find it a good safe beach for the family. They have restrooms and outdoor showers. The have lifeguards on the beach. The beach is clean. They want to keep it that way. Which is what we should do. Recently they replaced much of the wood on the pier. So, if your looking for an easy relaxing evening, then I do recommend spending an hour or two or longer in Seal Beach. The quaint little beachside town tucked in between the two larger beach towns. Aaahh, I think I may just head that way now.
