Sean Avery, Plaxico Burress and Adam Jones Rear Ugly Sports Heads

When Business and Pleasure Mix in the World of Sports

OK. So you made it to the "the big show." You are a star athlete and people follow you, look up to you, and respect you and your abilities. Then, you mix your personal life into the sporting world and you have let down your fans, your teammates, and your big wig bosses. Now what do you do? These scenarios happen way too often in the world of sports. It has been especially prevelant in this past year.

Let us start with one of the most recent instinces that happen only in the past day.

Sean Avery, star player for the Dallas Stars. Now, it is no real shocker that he has come up with something new to piss off people, after all this isn't this bad boy's first appearance in the media. His most recent actions are the comments made about former girlfriends that are dating other hockey players in the NHL. He used the words "sloppy seconds," which was completely and utterly out of line. His comments were made before Dallas's next game and thankfully the NHL has responded with exactly the type of reprecutions that I was looking for. They have suspended him indefinetly. More importantly, I think that the Dallas Star's have lived up to respecting the fans and players of the NHL. In comments made after the Avery incident, the Dallas was quoted as saying that they would have suspended him if the league hadn't. This guy needs some serious help, there must be more repercussions to come after this. Let us move on to the NFL, which has had also another recent incident that has left a bad taste in the mouth of fans.

Plaxico Burress, wide receiver for the New York Giants. How do you bring a gun into a night club, shoot yourself chettabob style in the leg, and not expect to be brought up on gun charges? For those of you who don't know who chettabob is, he is the guy that accidentally shoots himself in the leg in the movie 8 Mile. Kudos to Mayor Bloomberg for not sweeping it under the rug, but actually promising to punish all parties to their full extent. Did the NFL do anything about it? Not really, they would rather sweep it under the rug, no harm no foul right? Isn't that how the saying goes? But what if Burress had not shot himself, but another teammate? I mean I still haven't read in the papers why he had a gun in a night club in the first place. This isn't Burress's first bad boy behavior either. He has racked up numerous suspensions for insubordination.

Another recent piece of new is the return of Adam Jones. You know him better as 'pacman' who I think we have all heard his case. What a nut job. Great player, probably great teammate, but bad person. Will he ever change his image... it seems to get more skeptical each instance that happens. Personally, I think Jones has worn out his welcome in the NFL and that this chance he has should be his last. He makes Michael Vick look like a saint in my eyes.

Lastly, I would like to mention baseball and the issue with performance enhancing drugs. Now we have all heard about the issues happening in the MLB and I don't want to rehash any of it. I just want to say thank god someone has taken some initiative in sports. It may have tainted baseball a little bit, but it was absolutely necessary. They were cheating the game and the fans.

There are many more numerous instances like these few that I have briefly discussed, but it just goes to show that the so called heads of professional sports are starting to take some initiative and responsibility for the players of their respective leagues. We need to weed out these bad boys, and restore order back to the sporting world.

I am just now being acquainted to Sean Avery. Who knows, maybe he will finally draw SOME attention to the NHL.
