If you are targeting a specific location, be sure to do a little history on the area and what it is or who it is you may be looking for -- this helps to tie together any missing links together before you start your search.
Gather some equipment to take with you -- this can range in anything from a simple camcorder or camera to a complex, electromagnetic-field detector.
Always make sure you have someone with you, for a couple of reasons: one, in case something happens and you get hurt and two, if you see something that does not get recorded --then you have a witness.
Statistically, most hauntings and ghosts like to appear between the hours of 2 am and 5 am -- this is often referred to as dead time. Here is a list of the basics you may need to take on your ghost hunt:
Audio Recorder- Chances are you cant be in one place the entire time so an audio recorder maybe a good investment. For around $40.00 you can record most sounds and pick up any unseen movements. This is a great tool for documentation when you are not able to be at the location. Some are activated by voice and sound recognition, so you wont wear down your batteries.
Notebook and Paper- This is essential to be able to record times, events and to make special notes as to your surroundings. Be sure to document everything you see, feel and hear.
Wrist or Pocket Watch- Make sure to bring your wrist watch, this way you can keep track of what time any event may take place.
Flashlight- You will need a flashlight to be able to see where you are going in the dark. This is also something to bring along for safety purposes.
Digital Camera- For snapshots of random objects that may contain orbs or apparitions.
Camcorder- This is great if you have it. It can be the best tool for sharing with others your documentary of your haunting experience.
Compass- A compass is a cheap and handy tool used by most ghost trackers. When held out and pointed toward a direction, if the compass spins wildly or does not work correctly -- this indicates a spirit presence is very close by.
Thermometer: A thermometer is another inexpensive tool you may already have around the house. Watch closely as you walk near a haunted location -- the temperature can drop sometimes as much as ten degrees, this indicates a spirit source may be near by.
If you are really serious about ghost hunting and researching the paranormal, an Electromagnetic Field Detector can be utilized to find life beyond the living. The Electromagnetic Field Detector is a complex and fancy instrument that actually tracks energy sources or any fluctuations in electromagnetic fields. Known to be used by professional ghost hunters -- spirits can fluctuate the readings on this instrument by points of 2.0 and higher. A must for the serious spirit seeker.
These are just few basic tips to help get you started in your research. It can be a fascinating journey and you will learn more as you venture out along the way.
