Google's Birmingham offices are the center extraordinaire for auto news, and they plan some interesting expansions in the months to come.

At a workshop for media, Google spokesman and Chicago native Jake Parrillo had considerable praise for the Detroit area and tapped into that admiration to introduce some interesting new features at Google.

He says that savvy online-friendly journalists are natural targets for the newly refined Google Trends and other advanced search or informational tools that have become popular in recent months among writers, editors and researchers.

Within the last week, Google - which inhabits a modern yet modest office in Birmingham's business district - announced it will also be hiring at both its Birmingham and Ann Arbor locations.

Other media have also picked up the story and run with it, although Parrillo scooped area journalists with it in late fall. The Detroit News reports that the number of projected jobs to be filled globally will be greater than 6,000. That is the second large expansion since 2007, and the biggest to-date.

Before the proposed changes, Google housed about 30 employees in Birmingham. The Mountain View, Calif.-based corporation that employed almost 25,000 prior to the recent search revolutionized online search engines and numerous other aspects of computer use. It has been well-received by Michiganians and popular worldwide.

Google also owns YouTube and Gmail and has its fingers in several areas of the Internet, including through Google AdSense, a method for website owners to generate income through ad clicks.

With the addition of G2 technology for cell phones and introduction of the Android mobile software, the company continues to make notable advancements. The new Detroit-area hires, who will handle everything from account management to tech work, will help the company retain a cutting-edge presence in the world of technology.
