Searching for the Poets of Coventry, CT

Local Events for National Poetry Month 2009

Amanda Farrell
I have lived in Coventry, Connecticut for three months now. I have found much natural beauty and history to inspire poetry, but only just now have I decided to search for the others poets. What venues exist for poetic expression? What other poets might inspire me here? For National Poetry Month 2009, here are a few of my finds.

A great place to look for any kind of culture or artistic fulfillment in this area is the University of Connecticut, only about six miles away. This April 2nd I hope to attend a reading by Heather McHugh at the Konover Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. The auditorium is located at 405 Babbidge Road in Storrs. Please visit creativewriting.uconn.edu for more information. There are regular presentations held there by various significant authors.

I also hear that there are a couple of open mic nights nearby that welcome poetry readings. There is one sponsored by Song-a-Day Music every fourth Thursday at the Meet Me on Main Café, 1265 Main Street, Coventry. To confirm please call (860)742-6878 or email songaday@hotmail.com. The music and spoken words begin to flow around 7:00 p.m., but show up around 6:30 p.m. to sign up if you wish to perform.

At Corleones Café on Union Street in Willimantic, only about fifteen minutes from Coventry, there is an open mic followed by featured readers every third Wednesday. Call (860) 450-1277.

Well, in honor of National Poetry Month (which happens to coincide with my own readiness), I've added some local poetry events to my calendar. The nearby community is diverse in language, education, and culture, and I am looking forward to listening to many voices.
