SearchMe.Com Review

Can SearchMe.Com's Difference Help it Compete with Other Search Engines

Emily Bonilla
Becoming successful doesn't only have to do with being different as much as it has to do with providing what the consumers (in this case "content searchers" and "content providers") need and want and being able to capitalize on this. Upon comparing Yahoo, Google and SearchMe's main pages, the differences appear to be that Google differs from the other two because it doesn't aggregate information to its home page to provide the user with instant content. However, if you are a member and are signed in Google does too provide aggregation.

Another difference is the layout. SearchMe has a layout similar to Apple desktops, using 3D animated windows and graphics, whereas Yahoo and Google provide a simple layout with tables and lists.

Assuming that the "content searcher" wants and needs to find keyword relevant content quickly, they will be challenged to do this with SearchMe because the full layout results in slow surfing, and it has a limited amount of websites that have been crawled and added to their database.

On the end of the "content provider" they will not benefit from SearchMe if they are not listed and if they are will still not benefit from much traffic if SearchMe doesn't have many "content searchers" or an ability to pay for sponsored searches. In addition, from what I have researched so far, the different layout provided by SearchMe also uses up a huge amount of bandwidth from websites they crawl possibly costing the website owners money in bandwidth fees and slowing down their website or possibly creating website downtime.

After running several keywords through the search engines, I found that Google had the most search results, followed by Yahoo, MSN then SearchMe.

Google and SearchMe gives the option of a new search with correct spelling, while Yahoo automatically includes the corrected spelling results and asks if you would prefer to do a search with the originally typed keyword. MSN doesn't give any correct spelling options.

Google and MSN seem to provide the most keyword relevant search results, followed by Yahoo. SearchMe doesn't provide many results to judge by.

MSN and Google provide a list or related keywords.

Yahoo provides a large quantity of sponsored links whether related to keyword or not. Yahoo, Google and MSN provide sponsored links.

All three search engines have at least additional media content searches in image and video.

Google really puts the "content searcher" first. If you go to their website the first page you see is an empty page with a search field. They brand themselves as a search engine above all else. They also work hard to update algorithms to provide the most keyword relevant results to feed the users hunger for what they search for. By putting their most important asset first, the "content searchers" they attract the "content providers" because they want to get a piece of Google's traffic. If you want to find what you are looking for and fast, the best place to look is Google.

Overall, I believe that SearchMe's "different" layout that sets them apart from Google and Yahoo creates problems for them rather than creating a neat feature that consumers will find useful.
