Season 1 of the new hit series "American Horror Story" is officially behind us. Now that we've had time to digest all the spine-chilling craziness, it's time to focus on Season 2. When the series began, we didn't realize that the entire Harmon family would become part of the dysfunctional collection of ghosts that roam the halls of Murder House. Then again, these unnerving twists were necessary to ensure that we'd tune in for the next installment.
What about the Harmons?
There is a sense of completion in having the Harmons' fate outlined for us in this way-sort of like watching an 11-hour movie in exciting increments. Some may balk at the breaks in the plot's continuity. But you've got to ask yourself how long the Harmons' story could have gone on without audiences growing weary of the lingering mysteries; taking viewers swiftly through the process of the family's demise makes sense.
As ghosts themselves, they've already started scaring away potential residents. And we get the idea that this won't be the last family to run from the home screaming in the middle of the night. But then again, that's the point. There's just one catch: it's likely that we'll never see this creepy house (or most of its occupants) ever again--at least not much, anyway.
A New Horror Story…
Co-creator Ryan Murphy has indicated that the second season will take place in a setting other than the infamous Los Angeles mansion, and will have new characters. And if audiences have not gotten too attached to the Harmons' household, seeing the action take place in another locale might be a good thing. Changing up the game after the first season allows the series to grow infinitely; there's more than enough leeway to keep viewers creeped out. The series is called American Horror Story after all. Revamping the storyline also impresses upon its viewers that hauntings themselves are often random, yet very specific to the people who experience them.
Ultimately, we like that the TV show has taken us on a wild ride. That's what the F/X network is known for. But is a new locale simply too much, too fast? To viewers it might seem that the story was haphazardly written merely for shock value. But we now know that nothing could be further from the truth. Murphy even invites us to review previous episodes carefully (specifically, "Birth"); there were quite a few clues as to what would happen later on down the line. Audiences love mysteries. Better yet, we love being able to solve them given the proper hints.
Now that Vivien's surviving child (baby Michael) is walking the earth, we must not forget his rubber-suited origins. According to resident medium Billie Jean, a child born of a human and a ghost is destined to become the Antichrist. Having killed his nanny at just three years old, he's got Damien (from the "Omen" films) beat already. Introducing the spawn of Satan into the mix is a lofty concept. But then again, the series also purported to explain what really happened to the real life Black Dahlia. Anything is possible.
