Season 5 of the L Word is Going to Be Hot!

T. S. Jones
The season opens with Jenny revamping Lez Girls, where instead of Karina (Marina) hitting on her - its Nina (Tina)! Our little writer is on a rampage and it looks like her target is anyone who gets on her bad side, starting with Tina. Jenny has found an ally in billionaire William Halsey (played by Wallace Shawn), who will be backing a few pictures for the movie studio that Tina works for, including Jenny's. The look on Tina's face when William says that Jenny has an insight and vision of the world that is lesbians says so much. Adding salt to the wound, he says that Jenny is the only qualified person to direct the film. Talk about your mouth hitting the floor upon hearing that.

Tina, now an Executive VP at Shaolin Studios, tries to make peace with Jenny by coming by her house with coffee and croissants; much to Jenny's disgust. Tina tries to be helpful by giving Jenny a few pointers which gives Jenny the opportunity to come down hard on Tina for doing her job. Jenny was a difficult person last season and really made things hard for them both. Jenny needs to understand that friendship doesn't pay the bills and Tina had to do her job. Tina has to keep a strong mind and not blow up. Meaning now, Jenny has a voice where William can possibly make things difficult for Tina's position in the company. Can't wait to see how this unfolds.

Just when you thought that Shane was going to turn a new leaf and attempt to make up for a few mistakes....she turns that leaf over twice. Shane and Paige were set to get a place of their own and try to make a family with Jarod and possibly Shay. The real estate agent, in an undercut way, makes it known that she has a history with Shane and the ladies she's known over the years. This of course makes Paige feel a little uneasy. The afternoon barely ended before she had her innocent hands on another woman.

Interesting thing about this matter, at Phyllis' coming out party Paige confronts her wanting answers and in the same breath she accepts her ways and says she can live with it. If could live it then she should have sent Jarod away and joined in. Since it's just sex and all, you know. What's not to love about Shane? The thing that everyone loves about Shane is that despite her sexual generosity, she has a wonderful heart. Do you think Paige was so hurt to the point of torching WAX?

As Max set things up for Alice's first pod cast for OurChart, an interview with Phyllis and her coming out, Phyllis has a little notebook where she's jotting down 'the lingo' so she's not out of the loop during conversations. She doesn't know what the T stands for in LGBT and when it's explained to her through Max, the extent of T (transgender for those that don't know), Phyllis appears to be interested in Max's decision on his life, however Alice interrupts by saying that it's getting off the subject matter. Max expresses a great point - OurChart is for everyone right? Last time I checked it was opened to all in LGBT community. Max's frustration is highly understandable.

Joyce is ready to 'U-Haul' Phyllis which makes her feel uneasy at best, especially when she was in a 25 year marriage. She has rediscovered herself and is embracing being a lesbian; the last thing she wants is to be put back into that position. Joyce hosted a grand coming out party at The Planet and is welcomed in with open arms by some of her colleagues who to her surprise knew she was a lesbian long before she came out, thus making the transition all the more comfortable for her. Welcome home Phyllis.

Bette and Tina are wonderful parents to Angelica, friendly with each other, and there are some subliminal messages exchanged between the two. Especially with Bette flirting around what's going on in Tina's life. This is interesting considering she has a woman of her own. Why would Bette need to know who Tina's sleeping with? She knows it's not her; something she would like to happen but know that's not possible because of Jodi and because she apparently didn't pick up on what Tina was hinting to her last season. But anything can happen with those two. They will always be connected and it's not because of Angelica.

Jodi comes back from New York, straight to The Planet and Tina's not happy about it. Especially when Jenny confirmed how much in love they are - on purpose to get under Tina's skin. Bette had a wonderful surprise for Jodi in her apartment only to be shot down because the table is too big and she never used a tablecloth. This of course upsets Bette and she explains how she was trying to do something nice for Jodi and wasn't expecting that reaction from her. Jodi then changes the subject by taking control of the situation by blindfolding Bette and teasing her. But let us not forget that Jodi wasn't too keen on Bette's type A personality. Someone needs to bend here.

Alice tries to enjoy a night out with friends but her MP Officer girlfriend Tasha wasn't far from her mind. She couldn't keep her eyes off the news hoping she was ok in Iraq. Much to her surprise she's come home; ending the episode in a beautiful moment between the two lovers. After this episode though their relationship will be put to the test since the reason for Tasha not going to Iraq is she's being tried for homosexual conduct. This by the way is ridiculous. If anyone of any race, sexual orientation or gender wants to fight for our country and have the passion to do that - let them. Why feel bothered by someone who is gay? People need to understand that homosexuality is not a disease; it's how a person identifies themselves. The 'don't ask, don't tell' policy is truly unfair.

Not much was going on with Kit outside of finding out that she has cut all ties with Angus. She feels the need to start fresh with her life but she is holding her own.

This was just the first episode and it's going to get better as the season progresses. If you missed the season premier, episode LGB Tease is available on Showtime On Demand.

The L Word stars Jennifer Beals, Pam Grier, Leisha Hailey, Laurel Holloman, Mia Kirshner, Marlee Matlin, Katherine Moennig, Daniela Sea, Rachel Shelley and featuring Cybill Shepherd. The ground breaking show can be seen on Sundays at 9pm on Showtime.

I've been writing about the entertainment world for some time now. I enjoy the aspects of it, the ins and outs, and some of the drama is like a great reality show. My wish is to write for a few magazines and...  View profile
