The person that walks of the dark shadows at the airport to meet Jack turns out to be Kate. Jack tells her that they have to go back. This gives new meaning to all of the flashbacks from the past three seasons, because this flashback wasn't a flashback at all, but more of vision into the future. But it also showed that the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 were indeed finally rescued, or were they?
In a previous episode, John Locke was shot by Ben and left for dead. In the season finale, Locke is lying where Ben left him, and he awakens to find he is unable to move his legs. He sees Walt, who previously left the island with his father. Walt tells Locke that he can move his legs.
While Charlie and Desmond have went to shut down the Looking Glass Station, Ben's people raid the beach planning to take the pregnant women. Juliet had previously alerted the survivors to the intended plan, and a trap is laid for the men that are coming after the women. Jack leads the others away in an attempt to get them rescued by getting a signal out.
In the midst of Charlie swimming down and getting into the Looking Glass Station, Desmond wakes up (Charlie knocked him out in a previous episode) and someone on the beach, Mikhail, is shooting at him. He immediately dives into the water and swims down to the Looking Glass Station, where he find Charlie is captured by two women. Desmond hides inside the Looking Glass, and Mikhail shows up in the Looking Glass Station, talks to Ben for a few moments, comes out and shoots both women. One survives briefly and tells Charlie the code he needs to shut the station down. Desmond comes out from where he was hiding and shoots Mikhail.
If all of this isn't confusing enough, there's more. Jack's party encounters Ben on the way to the signal tower. Ben wants the phone from Naomi, the woman who parachuted onto the island. He tells Jack that if he doesn't give him the phone, he will tell Tom to shoot Sayid, Bernard, and Jin. He also tells Jack that Naomi isn't who she says she is, that the boat 80 miles off the coast isn't from Penny, Desmond's girlfriend. Jack doesn't give Ben the phone and Ben tells Tom to shoot. Jack hears three gunshots. Jack beats Ben up terribly bad, thinking that the three men have been killed. Unknown to Jack at the time, Tom shot three bullets into the sand.
During the walk to the signal tower, Sawyer and Juliet turn to go back to the beach. Hurley wants to come but is turned back by comments from Sawyer. Ironically, it's Hurley who comes barreling down the beach in the old van that saves Sawyer and Juliet. That's when Jack learns the three men were not killed.
During this time, Charlie has put in the code that will shut the Looking Glass Station down. As soon as the yellow flashing light goes out, there's an incoming message, which turns out to be Penny, Desmond's girlfriend. During the garbled transmission, Penny hears Charlie calling to Desmond to come.
That's when Mikhail, who Desmond had shot, is now outside the station looking in through a portal window with a grenade in his hand. He breaks the window and puts the grenade in the room where Charlie is. Desmond is running and Charlie shuts and locks the door to the room, which is filling rapidly with water. While taking his last breaths, Charlie writes a message on his hand and shows Desmond through the window on the door. The boat that is waiting is not from Penny, as Naomi had said it was.
Back at the signal tower, a bloodied Ben is tied to a tree as a signal is gotten with the phone, and contact is made with someone off the island. As she makes contact, she suddenly drops to the ground with a knife in her. Out of no where, John Locke has appeared, walking, and has a gun. He points the gun at Jack, telling him not to talk to the people who Naomi made contact with, threatening to kill Jack.
After tense moments, Locke tells Jack that this isn't what Jack is supposed to do and turns and walks away. Jack speaks with someone on the phone, who has a lock on their position. It seems like a happy ending.
Then is the scene where Jack is at the airport in the dark, and is meeting someone there, and Kate walks out of the shadows, with Jack telling Kate repeatedly that they had to go back. The most powerful scene of the show was the realization that the flashbacks this time were not flashbacks at all.
The entire series of flashbacks appear to not have been flashbacks at all for the series finale, but a look into what happened after the survivors were rescued. The beginning of the show was Jack in a seemingly flashback where he glimpses at a newspaper and sees something that disturbs him greatly. It turns out that someone had died, but we never learn who died.
The final show of the season for Lost left a lot of cliffhangers. The biggest cliffhanger perhaps is that Naomi had told Hurley that the remains of Oceanic Flight 815 had been found and that there were no survivors, yet the survivors were on the island and very much alive.
The season finale of ABC's Lost left many questions, but it definitely sent Lost out with a bang for the end of the season.
