Many of us decide to clean our house around spring, mainly because who doesn't love spring? The thought of having to clean out my house while it's beautiful outside is very intriguing to me. First off, I realize when I make a checklist it goes by much easier. Even if you can't go in order, just knowing what you need to do and not worrying about forgetting something is a big help. If I think of something else while cleaning and can't get to it right away, I like to write it down on my list, to be sure and remember.
So you sit down and start making your list. Where do you start? There's so much that needs to be done, it can seem very overwhelming. This is also a great time to do everything you keep telling yourself you will get to eventually, i.e.; going through yours and the kids clothes, reorganizing those cabinets, etc. But I would say it's better to start where you need the most results. If you save the biggest project for last, you more than likely won't finish it. I have found this out the hard way and while some learn better that way, you should try to take my advice on that one!
You want to be sure you list every detail even if it seems a waste. Mainly because if you are like me, once you start cleaning, you can forget the little things because you are focusing on getting it all done instead of taking your time. This is when you need to do the little details that make a big difference.
Say you decide to start on your bedroom first and you go through your closets, clean out under the bed, change the scheme of your room, whatever, but you are so busy with this that you forget to dust the tables, dressers, ceiling fan that's collecting all those cobwebs, the corners of your room long forgotten, the window that needs double Windex duty. These little things have such a huge impact on the end result of your cleaning. Just be sure you do not do any dusting or anything that will be a little messy until last. The last thing you want is stuff blowing around the room and whatnot while you are going through clothes or books or whatever. You'll want to vacuum very very last, so that you know you didn't miss anything.
When you finish one room, stand in the doorway and take a good long look. You should feel proud of yourself for getting such a big task accomplished and thoroughly, which means it will need less attention during the months to come. I would much rather do the occasional dustings than have to constantly go through my closet or get the cobwebs.
Last but not least, when you are all done, before sitting down to relax after your hard day of work, light your favorite candle or incense, or spray your favorite home fragrance. There is nothing more refreshing than sitting down to a clean home and a fresh smell!
