Currently every time someone crosses into another state they must stop to think about if they are carrying any firearms and what the other state laws are. While this may not be an issue for some people especially those that live near the center of a state, it becomes a very real issue for the citizens who live near the borders. As for citizens that do not own firearms and believe that the issue has nothing to do with them, they are completely wrong, if we let the second amendment fall then nobody but the authorities will legally have firearms. We as a nation need to face the fact that whether we like it or not the police forces tend to be more of a post - event group. The purpose of the second amendment was to install another level to keep the government in check. With different states shifting around their gun laws from restrictive to near communistic, it creates a sense of an unbalanced nation.
I am not going to sit here and say that gun laws should not be used, or that state governments cannot have a hand in the laws that govern their gun laws. I am just simply saying that the laws on a Federal level should be more protective. I fully support the idea of having many forms of qualifications to obtain firearms. In light of all the violence in the nation, I feel there should be more qualifications and "hoops" to jump through to acquire a firearm. Although once those hoops are jumped maybe they should take the restrictions down. After all what is the point of making citizens qualify for something that could be deadly if even after qualifying, the government still puts tons of restrictions in place to limit your purchases that your qualified in.
At this point in time there is one major protection granted for travelers across states on a Federal level, the Federal firearm transportation law, but even those are highly varied dependent on state. Another interesting fact is that the whole reason for the settlers to unify against the British and become the United States of America was to break away from an oppressive government. If we let the government control our level of self protection, are we not just becoming more like Britain again? Along with that note there is now a company that makes Kevlar lines book bags and clothing, for school uniforms, for children. Is this a society that will truly benefit from a gun - free policy?
I am not mainly here to push second amendment rights, I am here to push for more protection of our second amendment rights on a Federal level. That is is, nothing else really, nothing more, keep the laws we have but put into effect a national level of protection against states confounding the confusion issue with its citizens.
