Erica Jong predicted the Second American Civil War, among other remarkable statements, during an interview with the Italian magazine Corriere della Sera. Some of Erica Jong's other statements include:
"The record shows that voting machines in America are rigged."
"My friends Ken Follett and Susan Cheever are extremely worried. Naomi Wolf calls me every day. Yesterday, Jane Fonda sent me an email to tell me that she cried all night and can't cure her ailing back for all the stress that has reduces her to a bundle of nerves."
"My back is also suffering from spasms, so much so that I had to see an acupuncturist and get prescriptions for Valium."
"After having stolen the last two elections, the Republican Mafia..."
"If Obama loses it will spark the second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets, believe me. And it's not a coincidence that President Bush recalled soldiers from Iraq for Dick Cheney to lead against American citizens in the streets."
"Bush has transformed America into a police state, from torture to the imprisonment of reporters, to the Patriot Act."
Erica Jong seemed to be a very nice person when this author met her in the mid 1970s when she was on a college book tour. So it is a little disheartening when one hears that she has made statements like that.
The last time people predicted a civil war if a President were elected or not elected was in 1860. In that instance the people were not loony left wing writers, but white, southern slave holders. Mind, the capability of Erica Jong, Jane Fonda, or even Ken Follett (who has written some pretty good thrillers) to make good on a threat to start a Second American Civil War seems just a little bit laughable. The image of Dick Cheney personally leading American troops, fresh from Iraq, is a little delicious, if somewhat unlikely.
My one bit of advice to Erica Jong is, if Barack Obama does not pull it out, think of 2008 as a "zipless election." If the gentle reader doesn't get the literary allusion, read Fear of Flying and discover the concept of the "zipless (Four word obscene euphemism for sexual encounter beginning with the letter "F".)
And please, leave rantings about a Second American Civil War to the people dwelling in the fever swamps. Talking like that makes people think you are just a little crazy and you surely don't want that.
