Second Grade Language Arts and Websites to Make Learning Fun

A. Hermitt
Second grade language arts is about reading proficiency and writing skills. National standards makes suggestions on different aspects of these skills that needs to be learned. While the most valuable part of second grade language arts is many hours of reading, there are also some fun websites you can use to help you teach second grade language arts.

Silent reading for second grade homeschoolers: Students need to learn reading silently for enjoyment and for purpose. Encourage them to read instructions before trying new skills and to read road signs and labels. Also encourage A LOT of book reading. You can pick up these books at the library. You can also find a great deal of free books online for your second graders to read. Classics for young people and The Baldwin Online Children's Literature Project are good places to start. Students will improve listening skills as you read stories to them.

Interpretive reading for second grade homeschoolers: Dramatizations and interpretative or oral reading is something students need to learn one on one or in groups. While there aren't any websites to teach this, there is a great outline for Interpretive reading found on this school website.

Reading quotations for second grade homeschoolers: Teach students how to read using quotation marks by reading plays aloud and changing voices when reading with each character. Have them read along with you they can pick up that what is actually said by the character is marked by quotes. Starfall.com has a section on reading plays, non fiction, and comics that will help you.

Reading comprehension for second grade homeschoolers: To begin to evaluate what they read students must learn about story development, more specifically, the beginning, the middle, and the end of the story. They will also learn to do book reviews and organize ideas and expressions. The Gamequarium website has a readquarium page with lots of reading comprehension activities and games.

Writing skills for second grade homeschoolers: Writing skills should be learned in conjunction with reading and comprehension skills. Students learn to refine and practice manuscript handwriting, write independently, and also create simple forms of correspondence in writing letters and journaling. They should also narrate what they read, write descriptions, and poetry. Handwriting for kids.com gets kids started on writing skills. Also, Kids on the Net website has creative writing resources as well.

Grammar skills for second grade homeschoolers: There are also some grammar topics that second grade homeschoolers should learn. Second grade grammar lessons should include alphabetizing through second letter of a word, using dictionary guide words, vocabulary development, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, methods of word attack, spelling skills, simple punctuation and capitalization, table of contents, and using book indexes. Many of these skills can be taught at kids.aol.com.
