In speedball, you're going to sling a lot more paint. You'll spend less time looking for your opponent and more time spraying them down. In woodsball, you're more likely to conserve a bit more paint, which is the reason why a lot of players tend to prefer woodsball as far as the price goes.
There are ways to save money on paint. Of course you can go to your local sporting goods store and pay up to 65$ a case for premium quality paint, but there are definitely alternatives. Seconds paintballs are definitely a good way to get paintballs at an affordable price.
Of course seconds paintballs aren't always up to quality, and sometimes you'll have breaks in bags, dimpled paintballs, etc. The phrase "you get what you pay for" really applies to paintballs, however, if you really need to play, seconds paintballs may just be your way out.
I personally don't mind buying seconds paintballs, they tend to work just fine for me during recreational and practice play. They may be a bit inaccurate and occasionally break in my barrel, but that's better than paying double the price. I would much rather have two cases of relatively low quality paint than one case of high quality paint. It's really all in your own perspective, though.
Most really serious players want to get the best paint out there, let them do that, it only provides us with more seconds paintballs. Seconds are usually paintballs which have already been previously fired, and have been cleaned, bagged, and resold. Of course not all seconds paintballs have been previously used, some are just not up to quality to be sold as higher grade paint. Since these paintballs have been cleaned, they're generally a bit weaker, and actually break more often on impact, but also a bit more in your barrel.
Now, where to buy these cheap paintballs? It's difficult to buy them at retail locations, and if you can find them at fields they'll generally be almost as expensive as a normal case of paint. I recommend buying them in bulk online, to avoid shipping costs. At most locations, you can buy seconds paintballs for 20-25$ a case.
I recommend purchasing seconds paintballs from Actionvillage.com. I buy them 4 cases at a time, and it only costs me 100$. This is a great deal, since it saves on shipping costs, and the cases are only 25$ each.
There are other websites where you can purchase paintballs, but I recommend buying directly from actionvillage to ensure your quality. Most websites will sell seconds paintballs at just fine quality. However, I strongly recommend that you DON'T buy from Amazon (sold by amazon), or from Orderpaintball.com. I have had bad luck with these websites and so have other people I know.
Good luck with your seconds paintballs!
