Charles Darwin created theory of evolution by means of natural selection. According to Darwin's theory of natural selection, attractive females should select attractive males and in this way, good genes spread through the population. In this process, over a length of time, all men become equally good-looking.
The fact is that we find all people are not equally handsome like George Clooney or Brad Pitt. This fact has been used by those who protested against Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection. This reflects rather the flaw in the theory. This has been called "lek paradox."
A team of researchers at Newcastle University have found a way of explaining the difference in looks among human population. Professor Marion Petrie and Dr. Gilbert Roberts of this university explained the reason of racial diversity of mankind. In the words of Dr. Petrie: "It's much easier to think of it in terms of peacocks. You have a system in peacocks where males go around looking attractive and those than have the biggest and best tails get the most attractive females." He adds, "Evolution suggests that over time all peacocks would look the same because those good genes would spread through the population. But that doesn't happen and instead you get generation after generation with big tails and short tails, the choice doesn't disappear. What we've done is come up with a theoretical explanation for that."
Mutation can occur anywhere in an animal's genetic make-up. According to Petrie, some will affect the DNA repair kit possessed by all cells. Using a computer model to map the spread of genes in a population, Prof. Petrie demonstrated DNA mutations outweigh the effects of sexual selection. He states that the men with better genes for fighting off disease had a number of physical features which women found attractive.
The research was made with scores of attractiveness by the females. The female saw the photographs of the men and they rated the men. The scores of the survey was found to correlate strongly to genetic diversity. This interesting research has been published in the scientific journal Heredity.
