'Secret Life of the American Teenager' Gets Commitment-Phobic

Tina Molly Lang

This week on "Secret Life of the American Teenager," nearly every main character struggled with some form of commitment-phobia in their current relationships.

Ricky and Amy:

Now that Ricky and Amy were living together, Ricky's mothers were concerned that Amy would eventually want to marry him. They feared that his fear of commitment would be an impediment in the relationship. For Nora, this hit a little too close to home. She had broken up with her girlfriend because of her own inability to commit. She wanted to prevent her son from repeating her mistakes. Is she projecting her own issues onto Ricky? Or does she know her son all too well?

Ben and Adrian:

Ben's entire sentiment could be summed up in the following quote: "I can't do anything about losing Mercy, but I can do something about losing me."

Ben and Adrian had gotten married for the wrong reasons, and he wanted out. Yet that won't happen if Ricky has any sway in the matter. Ricky does not trust himself to remain faithful to Amy. A newly single Adrian would be too much temptation. Adrian herself is doing everything she can to hang onto her man. After months of decidedly un-Jackie Kennedy-esque mourning, Adrian brought the sexy back.

Leo/Betty/Camille:

Like his son, Leo was trapped in a marriage when he'd rather be anywhere else. Ben had brought it to his attention that Camille had quit her job because she was in love with Leo. This made Leo regret his marriage to Betty even more, but, unlike Ben, he had resigned to living with his mistake.

Of course, given that Camille had worked for Leo for 25 years and he had been widowed for a long time, it's surprising that this issue hadn't come up before.

Grace/Grant/Daniel:

Innocent Christian Grace seems to portray the cliche that the religious ones are secretly wild. While doing volunteer medical work in Zimbabwe, Grace met a boy named Daniel and slept with him. When she confessed and broke up with Grant, he was a bit too nice about it. Grace was skeptical and asked the ominous question, "What did you do?"

Which couple will fall apart first: Ricky and Amy or Ben and Adrian? What did Grant do while Grace was away? Will Ashley and Toby behave themselves while they are alone in that house? How many times will Ben walk down the aisle throughout the series?

Watch "Secret Life of the American Teenager" Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC Family.
