Secret Society at Yale Thought to Have Geronimo's Bones

Relative Says "Skull and Crossbones" Society Stole Remains Nearly 100 Years Ago

There is a legend about the top secret Yale society, Skull and Crossbones. It is said that nearly a century ago members of the secret society stole the remains of the Apache chief Geronimo from his final resting place at Ft. Sill, Okla.

If it is true, his great-grandson, Harlyn Geronimo, 59, of Mescalero, N.M., wants them returned, according to the New York Daily News.

He is hoping to prove that the skull and bones that were supposedly taken from the grave at the military base in Oklahoma are those of his great-grandfather, Geronimo.

Geronimo is hoping to have the remains buried near Geronimo's birthplace in the Gila Wilderness of Southern New Mexico is they are proven to belong to his ancestor.

"He died as a prisoner of war, and he is still a prisoner of war because his remains were not returned to his homeland," Harlyn Geronimo is reported to have said according to the New York Daily News. "Presently, we are looking for a proper consecrated burial"

In May of 2006, MSNBC reported a Yale historian having uncovered a letter, which seemed to lend some validity to the legend. It was written from one member of Skull and Bones to another and suggests that Geronimo's burial spot at Ft. Sill was raided and the remains taken to the stone tomb in New Haven, CT, that acts as the club's meeting place. It also makes mention of Geronimo's bit and saddle horn being with the skull and bones.

Geronimo was born in 1829 and was a great Apache warrior. In 1886 Geronimo surrendered to General Nelson Miles and was transported to Ft.Sill in 1894. He died there, a prisoner of war, from pnuemonia on February 17, 1909.

Harlyn Geronimo wrote to President Bush in hopes of receiving help in recovering the bones, especially since Bush, his father and grandfather were members of Yale's Skull and Bones, but he has not had a response from Bush, nor would the White House reutrn calls seeking comments.

Skull and Bones members are sworn to secrecy, which is likely why no one is talking about whether or not the bones are the Indian warriors.

A retired Bureau of Indian Affairs special agent in antiquities recovery, John Fryar, said if the society does have the bones they should be returned to Ft. Sill. "To ignore a request like this for the return of human remains is totally uncalled for," he said.

That's very interesting--and I've heard a lot about this. To elaborate more on this subject, I suggest a book called 'Secrets of the Tomb' written by Alexandra Robbins. This author (who also went to Yale...yet wasn't in the Skull and Bones) managed to interview many former members of this secret society. Some of them spilled some secrets--and others threatened the author for trying to them for information. But the most interesting secret revealed that relates to this article is the apparent reality of George W. Bush's grandfather (Prescott Bush) being the head of the group who raided Geronimo's tomb. It's said the skull is in a glass case inside the "the tomb" where the meetings and initiations are held. If true, then no wonder George has clammed up about it. That way, he doesn't have to go in there himself to retrieve it without having to go through a grueling initiation again. ;)

Wonder if there is any truth to the legend. It seems like a shabby thing to do.
