Greg Smith

For cat owners across the world, there is no better pet to have. While having their own personality, cats seem to be able to relate to what's going on with you. But there is a downside to having cats. It is the same downside that you find with many other pets, the need to have them potty trained.

But it can be a problem easily solved, if you take your time and properly train your cat to use their litter box.

Now before you start training, you should make sure you have the appropriate litter box for your cat. It should be made of plastic that is highly durable and easily washable (this helps you out as well). It should also contain just less than 2 inches of litter, so make sure the base is deep enough.

Although there are numerous scented litters on the market, it can be somewhat counter productive. Scented litters are made for humans, not cats. Cats sometimes reject scented litters because it smells unnatural to them. True there are a variety of grades and scents on the market, but you would do better buying for your can than for yourself.

Speaking of litter, when determining what grade to get, it's important to understand how a cat views litter. Cats have been observed to like small grades of litter. This is possibly due to the fact that it feels softer. This however, can be a little harder to clean, so try a find a balance between the two of you.

If your cat has a particular place it soils, place the litter box there. This will help your cat associate where to go to the bathroom. Once our cat has matured and got use to the litter box, then you will be able to move it around.

Cats like to use the bathroom after eating or taking a nap. Take note of when your cat wants to go. These are the moments you can adapt your training to. You can stimulate your cat's waste dispensing by playing with them near the litter box after a meal.

Once you find a correct time your cat will go, lead them to your litter box and get them curious by moving your hand around in the litter. Cats are curious creatures and will step in and experiment.

One final note, when speaking to your cat during training, speak to them in very soft tones. You want the cat to feel the litter box is a comfortable spot. It doesn't matter if they soil or not, be consistent. Eventually your cat will gravitate to the litter box and soil there.
