Secret Weapon Against Obesity?

Is Seaweed the Secret Weapon?

Michele Starkey
Researchers came across a startling discovery - seaweed may be the secret weapon against obesity! Imagine that, the secret weapon against obesity is rising up out of the ocean!

Researchers at the Newcastle University have uncovered that alginate, a kelp fiber, is credited with reducing the body fat intake by greater than 75 percent!

Simply adding this natural fiber to the foods that we eat on a daily basis (especially those carb items like breads and pancakes) may be the ticket to expediting weight-loss. You mean we get to eat our way thin?! That sounds appetizing.

Can this really, truly be the miracle solution to combat the bulge? Dr. Iain Brownlee who co-led the team at the University believes it can be and initial taste tests have been encouraging as well.

In 2006, chemists in Japan discovered that brown seaweed contained a called fucoxanthin which could aid in obesity. But even that discovery pales in comparison to the recent findings by the team at Newcastle.

I have often believed that most of what originates in the sea or ocean is healthier in the long run. Fresh fish, sea salts and now it seems - seaweed is the answer. Kelp is also beneficial for skin care and has been attributed with promising results as an anti-aging lotion.

Am I ready to embrace my Original Alginate Bran/Kelp Muffins in the morning? Maybe, if it meant a fast track to shedding those few extra pounds.

Will we see this ingredient making its way to the states as a means to battle obesity in America? For the right entrepreneur, this could open new market possibilities. Betty Crocker may even use this announcement to promote a Seaweed bakeoff to highlight the best kelp recipes.

The possibilities are endless and all I could think of was, with all of the promotion against obesity in America, why didn't we think of this ourselves?

Fantastic article! "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food." - Hippocrates. Also my grandmother, one of the first woman pharmacists in Iowa, and an old-time nutrition advocate. I think you can get green kelp sheets for rolling sushi at Asian stores and health food stores. Powdered kelp, too, and in capsules.

Seaweed was more popular where I grew up in Florida. Don't know if that's still true today. Good report. :)
