Secretary of S.D. State Democratic Party Resigns

Todd Epp
The secretary of the South Dakota Democratic Party has resigned.

Barb Himmel-Roberts of Hartford made the announcement today (March 20, 2007) via email to friends and supports.

Himmel-Roberts was elected party secretary in January 2007 by the Party's Central Committee. She resigned March 14, 2007 via a letter to the state party.

The text of her letter:

March 14, 2007

South Dakota Democratic State Party

Attn Executive Board

PO Box 1485

Sioux Falls, SD 57101

Dear SDDSP executive board members:

While I applaud the efforts to resurrect the South Dakota Democratic State Party into a viable organization, I have come to realize I do not have the time or energy to be the type of e-board member I believe is necessary with such an undertaking.

Please accept my resignation from the position of secretary of the South Dakota Democratic State Party effective immediately.

Please distribute this notice, as you deem necessary and appropriate.

Sincerely,

Barb Himmel-Roberts

Himmel-Roberts has been active in the S.D. Democratic Party. She was a Democratic candidate for Minnehaha County Commissioner in 2006 and a candidate for the state senate in 2004.

Rick Hauffe, state party executive director, noted the following on several South Dakota political blogs concerning Himmel-Roberts' resignation.

"Barb was a terrific asset as Secretary, especially in these challenging first three months of transition," Hauffee said. "She will continue to be a good friend and asset for Democrats who share her passion for South Dakota's future."

The state party will now have to select a new secretary. The secretary, along with the chair, vice chair, treasurer, regional representatives, and the major elected Democrats in South Dakota or their representatives make up the Executive Board (or E-Board) that runs the state party on a on-going basis.
