If you have posted a resume on every job board on the internet or if you are scouring the want ads in newspapers and community sites like craigslist, maybe it is time to add a new strategy to your job search toolbox. Maybe it is time to tap the hidden job market.

What is the hidden job market? It is not a physical space, but refers more to the fact that some jobs are filled without being officially announced in any of the classifieds and internet sites that job seekers might frequent.

Some of the ways that positions that are filed in the hidden job market without being advertised:

1. One way to tap the hidden job market is to attend recruitment events and open houses held by specific companies. You might see announcements for the open house, but not for a specific job posting.

2. Headhunters and staffing firms are a big part of the hidden job market. Registering with a headhunter or a recruiter is a good way to get entrance into specific companies that turn to recruiters to screen applicants. If you are interested in a specifi company, contact the HR office and ask if they work with a specific staffing firm.

3.Someone inside a company may know about an opening in their department and share that information with colleagues, friends or family. To tap this hidden job market, share your intent to look for work or make a career change with colleagues, friends or family. Sometimes companies will use this internal grapevine to find new applicants.

4. Another way to tap into the hidden job market is to make cold calls to companies. Ask about job openings and the company's policy on collecting applications for job opportunities not yet advertised.

5. Some companies run on-going application pools for certain positions. If there are vacancies, human resources will often search the applicant pool before making job announcements. Completing job applications for applicant pools may be time consuming, but it is a good way to access the hidden job market and make sure that your resume and job application are in the right place at the right time.
