Losing weight doesn't have to be strenuous. Making little changes in your lifestyle can have you dropping pounds before you know it. The secrets to weight loss are surprisingly easy to follow. Making better food choices and adding a little exercise to your daily routine make losing weight easy.

Eat a healthy breakfast

Never skip breakfast when you are trying to lose weight. This is one of the key secrets to weight loss and many people are surprised to learn this. A filling meal in the morning gives you energy to carry on the rest of the morning. Most people attempting to lose weight skip breakfast to save calories. When you restrict food to save calories you are actually telling your body to store fat because it thinks it is starving and will go into hibernation mode. Mid-morning snacks such as fruit or a granola bar will get you through until lunch.

Eat smaller portion more often

Nutritionists suggest 6 small meals instead of three large ones. The old standard of three square meals per day is being changed. Spread your meals out over the course of the day and eat protein, complex carb and fat at each meal. Three meals and three snacks a day will fit this requirement. It should go like this: breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and bedtime snack. If you work a day job, make your meals in advance and cut them in half. Take a mid-morning snack, lunch and afternoon snack to work with you. Snacks can be a single serving yogurt, popcorn, a piece of fruit or veggies and dip. Make meals with lean meats like chicken or fish, brown rice or sweet potatoes (less natural sugar than white potatoes and rice) and a green vegetable like spinach or broccoli. This is one of the secrets to weight loss that many people like because the extra meals keep you from feeling hungry all the time.

Get plenty of fiber

Fiber is your friend. Fiber is the hull on wheat seeds and brown rice. You get fiber in whole grain breads and cereals and some vegetables. This fiber is not digestible but helps to clean out the system and keep the body healthy.

Eat slowly

My grandmother used to tell me that it takes twenty minutes for your stomach to feel full. Sometimes when we are extremely hungry and eat too fast, we realize that we ate more than we intended to and now have a stomach ache, or that uncomfortably full feeling that causes us to unbutton the top button of our jeans for relief. It is very easy to overeat when we are in a hurry to eat lunch and make it back to work in that thirty minute window we call our lunch break.

Drink plenty of fluids

The body can actually survive longer without food than it can without water. The body gets dehydrated long before the physical signs of a dry, scratchy throat and cracked lips make it obvious. The body needs water to keep hydrated and keep the skin, hair and nails moisturized. One way to tell if you are getting enough water is to look at your fingertips. If they are smooth and have no wrinkles then you are well hydrated, if not then start drinking more liquids.

Walk a half hour a day

An easy way to get your exercise is simply to walk for thirty minutes a day. A walk through the grocery store while shopping actually counts as exercise. Walking your dog or playing with your kids in the park also counts. Turn on the radio while the kids are in school and dance to your favorite tunes for half an hour. It should be easy to find creative ways to get your exercise.

Replace sugary and salty snacks with healthy alternatives

Retrain your brain to think healthy. Rather than reach for candy bars or chips make better food choices. Choose low salt rice cakes, unbuttered popcorn, vegetables and dip, cheese and crackers or fruit and yogurt topped with crunchy almonds or homemade granola.

Choose low sugar fruits and yogurt instead of candy and ice cream.

Fruit Popsicles and frozen yogurt taste good when you want something sweet. Low sugar desserts and sugar-free candy tastes just as good when you are really craving chocolate. Sometimes the only way to beat a craving is to have just a bit. A bite size Snickers bar or small Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia can hit the spot. Just limit these as once in a while treats. Indulge too often and you are defeating the purpose of changing your eating habits. Follow these healthy habits to shed excess pounds quickly and safely in no time at all.
