Secrets of a Fashion Stylist

Simple Tricks that Stylists Use

Marissa
I have been a freelance fashion stylist for about 6 years and have worked with Seventeen, AOL and Noggin. Being a stylist you have to think on your feet and fix problems that may arise. Stylists have all kinds of tricks and quick fixes. When you see stars like Jennifer Lopez in low cut gowns (the infamous ultra low green Versace dress) there are ways to make the fabric stick. Follow these tips and you're sure to fix those fashion mishaps in a heartbeat.

Deodorant on your top?
Getting ready in a hurry often leads to getting that annoying white stuff on your top. Have an extra pair of stockings laying around? Bunch them together or tie a knot and rub the deodorant off of clothing. It will be off in no time!

Need a quick hem?
If you're five feet like me, you know how buying pants always leads to getting a hem. Sometimes you buy a pair of pants or jeans and want to wear them that same night to go out with friends. Well, now you can. Put on your pants and tuck them under to the desired length. Then grab a stapler and use four staples. One in front, one in back and two on either side. Put the staples on the bottom so that they are discreet. This is a quick and easy fix until you can get to a tailor!

Want to make your jeans look vintage?
Want to give a pair of jeans that vintagey worn out look? Go to your local Home Depot or Lowes and pick up some sand paper. Rub the sand paper on the areas of the jeans you want to look worn. It's as easy as pie!

Low-cut dress not staying in place?
I think all women can relate to this situation. You love the dress, but you are having a popping out sutuation. All you need is Topstick. Topstick is a double-sided adhesive used to make wigs stay in place. It works wonders and will most definitely keep your dress in place. The same company also makes Fashion Fix, which is basically Topstick for clothing. You can use either, it will work exactly the same. You can go to www.wigwarehouse.com to order.

New shoes on the slippery side?
You just purchased some new pumps but they are slippery on the bottom because they haven't been worn yet. Here is a quick way to make them unslippery for that wedding you have tomorrow. Grab a scissor and etch lines into the soles. Make the lines go diagonal both ways by crossing eachother. Three to four lines going each way should do the trick!

Ring to big?
You recently added a fabulous cocktail ring to your wardrobe, but it's a little big. You want to wear it tonight to you best friend's birthday party but don't want it to fall off. Take a band-aid and wrap it around the bottom of the ring. Viola, it will stay in place until you bring it to be sized!

I hope these quick fixes help you when you get stuck in a fashion bind next time you're getting dressed. Remember, there is always something that can be done to make you look fabulous!
