There are so many advantages in feeding your baby homemade baby food. You know what is in the ingredients and what they are getting. You have more control what they eat since you can mix and match all sorts of combinations that you can't find in any store. Plus, the entire process is simple and fun to do.
Before you get started you do want to keep in mind that you should not combine two new foods at the same time. Why? Because if your baby would happen to be allergic to a certain food you will know exactly what it is and not have to try and guess as to what it could have been. This is important to know.
To get started making your baby's own food you will need something to mix the different fruits, vegetables and meats in. You can use a blender or food processor; it doesn't matter what type or brand. You will also need something to store the baby food in. I know people who will use empty baby food jars, ziploc bags, or even empty ice cube trays for storage containers.
Next, you want to cook your vegetables or meats. When you are cooking these items you do not want to season them in any way. No salt, pepper, or margarine. Only use water. I would also advise cooking them on the stove top instead of the microwave. Once you have fully cooked the vegetables or meat, you want to drain off the water and then place it in your blender or food processor. Push the puree button and you are finished.
There is no limit on the types of vegetables you make into baby food. Carrots, peas, green beans, squash, sweet potatoes, etc. Once you know your baby is not allergic to any of these vegetables you can even begin mixing some of them together.
You can do the same thing with fruits, except they do not need to be cooked. You can make homemade baby food out of virtually any fruit; bananas, peaches, berries, apples, pears, and the list goes on. For fruits such as apples, pears, or others with a thicker skin, you should peel them first.
Finally, after you have blended the vegetables or fruits you can simply put them into the containers for easy storing. If you are going to use ice cube trays to store your baby food in you will want to freeze the tray once you have filled it with the blended foods. Then, once is has frozen solid you can take each compartment and put it inside a baggie. Just don't forget to write what is in the bag before you store it away. When you want to use a baggie at mealtime you can pop it into the microwave for a few seconds and you will be set to go.
Homemade baby food makes a great option for any family. You might just want to give it a try with your baby. I think you will like the results.
