When considering home care, you must figure out first who is going to be looking after your child and to what extent. This will depend greatly on the child's condition and the medical procedures required in order to keep him relatively healthy. For example, daily injections, tube feedings, etc. may be necessary and some parents feel that a home care nurse would be better equipped to handle these routines, while others find that learning new procedures is worth their time, to avoid having to hire someone. Even if you choose to do everything yourself, remember that both parents ought to know what to do since there will be days when one is out of commission and will be unable to perform the necessary duties.
The whole point of home care is to provide a home environment for your child, no matter what state he is in. This usually means incorporating him into the family routine as much as possible, by bringing him out of his room and sitting him in his wheelchair in the kitchen while you cook, or perhaps laying him on the floor in the living room to play with his siblings. Unless your child is completely dependent upon machinery in his room, it is vital that he experience the normality of family life, otherwise, home care is useless. Also, most children respond very well to the hustle and bustle of their brothers and sisters and enjoy watching every day routines such as cooking dinner that simply aren't available in a hospital situation.
Keeping things clean while fun is another challenge of child home care. The whole idea is to avoid the sterile environment of a hospital, even if you must maintain the area very, very clean. Bringing in stuffed animals, hanging posters on the walls and mobiles or models from the ceiling is a great way to bring some life to a room full of medical equipment. Fun, themed bedding is another good way to go; kids enjoy space sheets and characters from their favorite TV shows on their beds.
While home care can be difficult, it is also quite rewarding to have your child with you. Just make sure that you take a break when needed since you don't want to burn out, your child needs parents who are able to care for him without resentment and that is only possible when you take a little time to yourself.
