Tips to Help You Conduct Secure Online Banking

Mike Burnside
Banking online securely is not a guarantee because hackers can find access to your accounts no matter what you do. However, by using the following tips you can drastically reduce the odds of hackers getting in and still conduct your online banking a little more securely.

1. Security Software is Important to Online Banking

Make sure that you have installed security software on your computers at home and keep it up to date. Many hackers will find ways into your personal computer system and compromise your account information. Security software can help to minimize that threat.

2. Beware of Email Phishing with Online Banking

Many hackers have set up email notifications that look just like what your bank would send you through the email. It is important to not click on any email notifications sent to you from your bank, rather instead independently go to your bank's website bypassing the link sent to you.

3. Check for a Secure Page Before Banking Online

It is important that the bank's website is secure before you enter your log on and password. A simple way to know is to look at your browser and verify that the web page has an https and not an http. The s at the end is an indicator that the web page is secure. If you use either Firefox or Chrome as your Internet browser, they both have a green label when the web address is secure.

4. A Strong Password for Online Banking

Strong passwords are always the best defense against hackers, especially with online banking. Random strings of numbers and letters are the best passwords. Try to avoid words and names as a password. Many browsers will ask you if you want to save your password, make sure to click no. It should be understood, but never use the same password for any two websites. If your memory is not as good as it used to be, use good, encrypted password manager software.

5. No Public Networks While Banking Online

There are certain things you just do not do in public that you might in private, and that includes online banking. Security is never good at any public Wi-Fi network location. It is best not to use public networks while online with a credit card company or purchasing from your favorite retailer.
