Security Tips for Wireless Broadband Users

The following tips and practices are not only useful for wireless broadband users, some are generally recomended practices for other kinds of Internet connections as well.

Wireless Internet Security Tip 1 - Remember to Unplug Your Router

Every wireless broadband service come with a router or a canopy which is used to send and recieve data, and translate them into microwave or radio signals. However these devices can also easily be accessible by attackers, who will want to use your internet for several reasons, as such are stealing your files and sending information out to spam networks.

Considering you have antivirus and antispyware, and other hack proof utilities installed, you are safe as long as you are in front of your computer. In the event that you leave your computer unattented though, these attackers knows overides in order to disable your security system, and thus compromising your wireless network security.

To resolve this, make sure that you unplug your Router's adapter when the computer is not in use. You might as well have just unpluged your computer, but as long as your Router is turned on, some pro hackers still have means to use just your broadband connection.

Wireless Internet Security Tip 2 - Don't Use Torrent

For the most part, this cant be helped. A torrent, or file sharing through peer to peer networks are already a risk by itself, moreover you will have to leave your computer on overnight for really huge torrents.

Torrents add an exeption to your firewall and sometimes antivirus, so nothing is safe when it comes to torrents.

The worst of all risks is that with P2P sharing, you open your IP address to everyone using the torrent.

Wireless Internet Security Tip 3 - Use Proxy Networks More Often

Using a web proxy is like hiding your identity to the entire web. Especially if you are dealing with compromising information, or even things that you think has the potential of being so, it is advised to resort to using proxy networks. They do hide the IP address and use their own IP address servers to connect you to the internet, making your presence annonymous to the rest.

Most proxy networks will display ads (sometimes more compromising advertisements) or depend on premium services so it is always up to you to choose which free or premium proxy service is best for your needs.
