Security Tools is a malware program that captured my computer today and I am not quite sure how my computer became infected with this malware. This program takes over your computer and prevents many of the programs from running. The malware also keeps other registry cleaners and security software from opening on your computer. The control panel setting to add/remove programs would not work either so it is very difficult to get rid of this problem. The only thing I could do was log on to the internet. My FTP software would not open. The desktop icons got wiped out and the only ways to access them was to right-click while holding the mouse over the taskbar and then choose "show desktop".
This is very frustrating to remove and I finally went to the internet and was surprised at how many people had posted links to remove this malware.
My approach worked and it was as a result of some tips from several websites.
The solution for my computer which runs Windows XP was to download a free program called malwarebytes from malwarebytes.org. You do not need to purchase the paid version because the free download works to get rid of this very annoying malware called Security Tools. First download the malwarebytes program to your desktop. You then want to reboot your computer. The very ingenious Security Tools malware prevents this program or any other spyware program from working to remove Security Tools on your computer while running in normal mode. You must reboot in Safe Mode.
The secret is to press "F8" while rebooting your computer and choose Safe Mode. Once you are in Safe Mode, the malwarebytes program will run and find the hidden files and delete them. When you run the program, you may have to choose to perform full scan. I actually ran the quick scan and it got rid of the Security Tools Malware so you can try that first. This was the only way I could find to remove this malware.
