Sedona's Moonlight Sonata

My Dog-Day Poem Entry

Melissa Lawson
I always loved the bigger dogs,
Who would wrestle, play and jog.
I never thought there'd come a time
I'd love a smaller dog.
But Moonlight was a birthday gift,
For my little girl.
And, in a very short time,
She was a big part of our world.

A tiny little Chihuahua,
She looked like a little rat!
And Sedona spoiled her totally,
She even harassed the cat!
This tiny little puppy
Took over our little home.
Yipping, yapping, whining
Each time we left her alone.

Solid black is she,
With white patches on hind feet.
A small white patch on her chest,
We thought was really neat.
"Moonlight splashing across the shadows",
The color reminded Sedona of.
So Moonlight Sonata became her name,
And she gave us all her love.

Chihuahuas only bond with
One or maybe two.
Sedona was her "mommy",
But it was me that she clung to.
This little rat-sized dog,
With ears like bat wings,
Using those bug-eyed puppy eyes,
When she got into everything.

"Yippers, yappers, ankle-biters"
Are things people call the Chi.
"Demon dog", and "bad",
"Evil dog", "bad seed".
But to me and to Sedona,
She's a bundle of joyful love.
Protective of her little pack;
With strangers, she's too rough.

No one comes into my house,
Without approval from the pack.
If I don't tell her it's okay,
The stranger gets attacked.
This tiny little chi
Stole my heart, right off the bat.
I love her "spit-fire" attitude -
This dog is no door mat!

She made a pit bull back right down,
And stay away from me.
She fought off a german shepherd
That chased our cat up in a tree.
She's got a temper just like mine,
No one would call her tame.
But she's full of love for her little pack;
Moonlight Sonata is her name.

I'm a single mom of one wonderful little girl. I've moved around a lot in my lifetime, and have been through many things. I consider myself a survivor.  View profile

•Chi's brains are the largest of any breed, when compared to the size of their bodies
•A Chi once adopted and nursed an entire litter of kittens!
•There is no such thing as a "miniature", "teacup", or "toy" Chi. Only bigger or smaller Chihuahuas.

The only thing you can do once you've looked into the eyes of a dog is just accept them for who they are and let them come on in. After all, that's what they do to us. Unconditional love. Isn't it great! Loved it, Melissa
