See You, Brother

An Anaphora Sonnet

Dave Powell
I'll see you again.
See you, I'll pray, again in a brighter light.
See your heart repaired again,
doing your precise art again, overseeing each pencil stroke again,
seeing it grow from start to end again.

I'll see you again, be amazed and transfixed
again by your creative delights.

I'll see you again.
See you, I'll hope, again in a greater life.
See your mind restored again-
viewing the universe from inside again,
more deeply than science itself will see again for a long, long time.

I'll see you again, be awed and mystified
again by your awesome cosmic insights.

  • Emphasis of words and phrases through a repetitive "Anaphora" form.
  • The way this repetition creates a "rap-like" beat when read aloud.
  • Look for the various word forms related to "see."
I wrote this poem upon my brother Byron's death...after decades of hospitalization for schizophrenia. As a boy, he was a brilliant scientist, mathematician, and artist (who exhibited his drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Columbus, OH, at age 11).
