See Thru Clothes and Other Back to School Fashions Faux Pas to Avoid

Tips for Buying Kids Clothes when Going Back to School Shopping

Sylvia Cochran
Back to school fashions vary by age and gender, and parents blessed with a uniform-friendly school breathe a sigh of relief. All others must carefully pick their paths past see thru clothes and back to school duds that have all the makings of a fashion disaster. Learn what to avoid.

Keep See Thru Clothes Out of Back to School Fashions

See thru clothes usually factor in big when dealing with fashion-conscious preteens and teens who want to go back to school shopping. Fashionising explains that the sheer and see thru clothes fashion trend is smoking hot in 2010 and beyond; not surprisingly, the average middle or high school girl with even a cursory interest in fashionista magazines likely wants to own an outfit.

Tip: Stay away from lace tops, chiffon, mesh sports shirts and thin white t-shirts. Your daughter will thank you in 10 or 20 years.

Don't Let Your Son Get Caught Wearing Girls' Clothes

This is a common back to school fashions faux pas that is usually committed by moms unaccustomed to shifting gears from buying little kids' clothes to big boys' outfits. Polo shirts in particular appear unisex, but their buttoning gives them away.

Boy's shirts feature buttons on the right side, while girls have them on the left. Even though next to nobody would consciously consider the buttoning of kids' clothes, among the youngsters it matters. When going back to school shopping, pay close attention to where the buttons are and do not have your son get caught wearing girls' clothes. The teasing will never end!

Tip: Once the child starts wearing button-up shirts, shop in the boys' section.

Unsafe Back to School Clothes from the Second Hand Store

Back to school fashions on a tight budget might dictate a trip to the thrift store. Remember that - unlike department stores - it is entirely possible to run across recalled or patently unsafe clothes in these venues. The UNH Cooperative Extension warns parents to stay away from clothes with large pockets, drawstrings or attached belts.

Tip: Familiarize yourself with recalled clothes and consumer warnings from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Know the brands and also the items that made the kids' clothes unsafe.

Keep a tight hand on the purse strings when going shopping for back to school fashions with your kids. Clothes that conform to current fashions - i.e. see thru clothes - are highly inappropriate for school aged girls, even though they are heavily marketed to that age group.
