Seeing and Believing

Things Are Not Always as They Appear

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

The brightness of a light
Can be reckoned in lumens
With relative knowing
In the measure;
So unlike our fellow humans
For whom something to one
Is a curse
While to others near-by,
It is a treasure.

It is always amazing
That when the sun is blazing,
We don't all turn to toast;
The wonder is hard-wired and
Genetically ingrained
Though science has explained
Why the rays from Old Sol
And stars much further away
Do not summarily roast.
If the full-moon did not move
From where it seems to come up
To where it appears to retire
From the sky,
It would look as though
It were part of a painting
Suggesting the illusion
That the glowing round giant could fly.

It is no great surprise
That people thought that the
Earth was flat;
Looking out at the horizon
It's hard to imagine
Anything other than that.

Sometimes when people are crying
They are not really unhappy at all;
And when they make the sound of laughing,
They may not really be having a ball.

Appearances can be deceiving,
Every person knows this fact.
Differences abound between the ways
People most deeply are
And the ways that they
Sometimes act,

Nature is more inherently honest,
What we see is what we get;
When the weather is dry
Creatures can get parched,
And when it rains
They tend to get wet.

    So full of truthfulness is this work David. Indeed it is true but when we read and know you, we know what we are getting and it is the real deal. Many blessings to you my good friend.

    Appearances before eyes are often the least real truths.

    WHAT?! MIke Oberg has brought to my attention that the last word in the second line of this poem which was "lumens" has been somehow magically transformed into the non-sequitor, "lumbermen." I have asked for it to be edited back to the way it was written. Strange goings -on here !

    Sometimes reality gets our attention, but often we see what we believe.
