Seeing Concerts Like Hannah Montana in 3D at Theaters

The Positives and Negatives

Lee Andrew Henderson
U2 3D has hit movie theaters and it will be joined at the movie theater by Hannah Montana in 3D. U2 3D has been getting rave reviews. Could 3D concerts at the movie theater be the new fad instead of going to an actual concert? Let's take a look at the positives and negatives of going to a 3D concert at a movie theater compared to going to the actual thing.

Positive #1 of a 3D Concert: Price
A lot of people complain about movie prices theses days, but if a movie ticket costs an arm and a leg then tickets to concerts cost somewhere between 34 arms and 48 legs. I don't know how much a U2 or Hannah Montana ticket costs but certain concerts can cost in the hundreds maybe even thousands if it's a really hot ticket.

Positive #2 of a 3D Concert: Location
Unfortunately when a music act like U2 or Hannah Montana goes on tour they can't go to every single city in the United States. A normal U2 or Hannah Montana concert might not come to your town and having the concert available at the local movie theater is a lot more convenient.

Positive #3 of a 3D Concert: Comfort
I guess number three depends on your local movie theater and arena. My local theater is very comfortable. It has stadium seating, really comfortable seats and plenty of leg room. The closest arena to me seems to think that all of their concerts are so awesome that the fans will be standing the whole time because the chairs are insufferable. Not to mention the area you have to walk on in each row is so small that it makes me feel like Ma Fratelli is forcing me to walk the plank off of One-Eyed Willy's ship.

Positive #4 of a 3D Movie: Crowd
Obviously a big and rowdy crowd can have a great effect on a concert, but crowds can be a pain too. I can't count on my hands and toes how many times I've been to a concert and smelled like beer on the way home because the drunk behind me doesn't realize that gravity will cause the bear to come out of his drink when he jumps up and down.

Positive #5 of a 3D Concert: Traffic
A movie theater could have traffic but not nearly as much as a concert. It's simple math. U2 and Hannah Montana concerts probably have tens of thousands of fans. How many does your movie theater hold? Not a whole lot.

Negative #1 of a 3D Concert: Atmosphere
There is only one negative of going to the U2 or Hannah Montana concert in 3D, other than those ridiculous 3D glasses you have to wear, but it's a pretty big one. There is no way that the atmosphere at a movie theater can be the same as a U2 or Hannah Montana concert.

In any event that has fans, whether it's a U2 or Hannah Montana concert or a sporting event, it can be greatly effected by a crowd. I remember one year my friend and I went to a WWE pay-per-view once. The pay-per-view, Armageddon, ended up being one of the worst pay-per-views of the year, but my friend and I had a blast because seeing it live with the crowd completely changes the experience. I'm not sure how fans will react to seeing U2 or Hannah Montana in a movie theater. Will they actually stand up and cheer and act raucous like would do at the real thing? Or will they sit quietly and watch it like a movie? I just can't imagine the experience being the same.

All of the positives for the U2 or Hannah Montana 3D concert that I listed are part of the atmosphere as well. Those are all things that I don't enjoy but some people might think of them as part of the show. Maybe fans of Hannah Montana think that uncomfortable seats are just part of the charm of concerts. Maybe U2 fans don't mind having beers dumped on them because they are going to drink so much they're going to smell like beer anyway.

There are more positives than negatives for seeing a 3D concert of U2 or Hannah Montana at a movie theater, the one negative will outweigh the positives to many fans. It simply comes down to this: Do you mind uncomfortable seats, traffic, rude fans and expensive price? If you're willing to put up with those things then an actual concert is better for you.

Great article! For the kids, I find the different atmosphere of a movie theater to be better suited, so I bet if more of these hit the theaters, we'll be attending. We plan to see the Hannah Montana one this weekend or next. I'll let you know if it was worth it. :-)
