Seema, a Female, Becomes Ranjan, a Male, Due to Confusion in a Small Indian Village

It was very difficult for Indian Seema Chackrobortty to grow up female and then realize she was actually a male. Chackrobortty, of the small town of Dinahata in West Bengal, was 15 when she first felt a terrible pain at her abdomen and had been admitted to nearest hospital, according to Bengali newspaper Anandabazar Patrika.

Chackrobortty suffered from pseudohermaphrodites, a condition in which someone has external genitalia of one sex and internal sex organs of the other. IT's not a true hermaphrodite because there is no ambiguity in the sex of the external genitalia and no question about gender at birth.

A few days later a team of specialists performed plastic surgery on her genitals to change her from female to male. She became Ranjan Chackrobortty. Ranjan is a male name. After surgery, Chackrobortty, 35, is still confused about what he wanted to be and what he is today.

After Chackrobortty's birth, everyone looked at him as a female. He grew up as female with all female friends and he also completed his education as a girl.

The fact was difficult to accept for the people of a small town, too. According to the Anandabazar Patrika, Ranjan mingled with neither females nor males in the village. He just became a separate entity. As he spent more than 15 years as female it was difficult for him to go back to the same old female friends after the surgery.

According to the Anandabazar Patrika, it's difficult for him to make new male friends, too. He never got a chance to escape of the villagers' curiosity.
