Sega Dreamcast Games that Still Hold Up Well Today

On September 9th, the Sega Dreamcast turns ten years old. Although the video game system was short-lived and lead to Sega leaving the console manufacturing business, it holds a special place in the industry thanks to its many innovations and especially great titles. Here are five Sega Dreamcast games that still hold up well ten years after the system launched.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Publisher: Capcom, Developer: Capcom, Release Date: August 8, 2000
Capcom recently ported Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to the Playstation Network of the Playstation 3 and Xbox Live Arcade of the Xbox 360. Although the fighting game was also on the Playstation 2 and Xbox, Capcom chose to port the Sega Dreamcast code instead. This is because the system provided the closest version to the original arcade game. Needless to say, the Sega Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is still holding up well.

Phantasy Star Online
Publisher: Sega, Developer: Sonic Team, Release Date: January 29, 2001
Before the Sega Dreamcast, online gaming was pretty non-existent on the home console market. When Phantasy Star Online was released, it immediately drew a huge cult following due to its addicting cooperative gameplay. Sega decided to release a sequel in Phantasy Star Universe. However, many fans were critical as the new game were simply too different from the original. To them, Phantasy Star Online still holds up well by today's standards.

Seaman
Publisher: Sega, Developer: Jellyvision and Vivarium, Release Date: August 8, 2000
Well before EyePet on the Playstation 3 and Milo on the Xbox 360, the Sega Dreamcast has its own unique interactive simulation. In Seaman, you must take care of a weird fish with a human face attach to it. In addition to feeding it, you can also strike up a conversation with the strange creature via the microphone. With very little games like it, Seaman still provides a unique experience that holds up really well.

Shenmue
Publisher: Sega, Developer: Sega, Release Date: November 6, 2000
Shenmue is one of the most expensive games ever made. Although it ended up hurting Sega in the pocketbooks, many hardcore gamers still enjoy the excellent open-world game with incredible details. This exclusive title easily holds up to the test of time. In fact, no other game is as engrossing as Shenmue on the Sega Dreamcast since it was released in North America in late 2000.

Skies of Arcadia
Publisher: Sega, Developer: Overworks, Release Date: November 6, 2000
Skies of Arcadia is about as epic as a role-playing game can be. As sky pirates, you get to roam the massive world filled with many unique locations and memorable moments. Although the frequent random battles can get on your nerves, Skies of Arcadia is defiantly worth the extra grind. Thanks to the lack of console role-playing games these days, this Sega Dreamcast game is holding up nicely.
