Sonic the Fighters (Arcade)
If you are an arcade player back in the 1995, you might had stumble upon this game somewhere at the mall or at the laundry and got surprise that it is Sonic's first foray into the arcade and was also the first Sonic fighting game. The game plays very similar to Sega's 3D Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers series since the game itself was developed by the same team that developed those games (AM2). Unlike Super Smash Bros., Sonic the Fighters don't rely on fighting and knocking opponent off the arena but brawl and draining out each fighters energy until one beat the other like the many arcade fighting games out there at the time. Also unlike Super Smash Bros., Sonic's first fighting game only allows for one-on-one fight and only two players can duke it out compare to the four player free-for-all brawl of Smash Bros. Though this fighting game isn't as phenomenal as the Super Smash Bros. series it was the first game where Sonic had his first taste of brawl. For those that never had a chance to experience this at the arcade, Sega did released a collector's edition called Sonic Gem Collection in which this game was bundle alongside many other classic Sonic titles available for the PS2 (only in Japan) and GameCube.
Sonic Battle (Game Boy Advance)
If you own a Game Boy Advance and love playing Sonic's portable games, you may have actually got a chance to play this game. This is indeed Sonic's second time in a fighting game but at this stage it really tries to turn it into more and more like the Super Smash Bros. series since now four players can get in on all the fun; however, the game doesn't play much like a fighting game. In fact, Sonic Battle seem more like a party free-for-all game then a fighting game but fighting is the main point of the game most of the time players actually tries to collect more items than fighting against one another. Since this portable Sonic fighting game never reach phenomenal status similar to its prequel Sonic the Fighters, Sega had finally had enough of Sonic's fail fighting spirits and thus never made another Sonic fighting game after this; however, due to fans petition and public demands from across the net and the popularity of the Super Smash Bros. series. Sega had finally heard the prayers of the many Sonic fans and decided to let there blue hedgehog fight again, but this time in a different territory. In fact, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is indeed the third time all Nintendo main icons had their fights and that includes Sega's Sonic as well.
Sonic and Tails in Super Smash Bros. Melee
If you are the many gamers who actually read about videogames for a living and collect EGM magazine or had subscribe to EGM, you might have heard about this one little April Fool joke claim by one of the EGM editors. The joke claims that Sonic and Tails would actually appear as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee by entering Cruel Melee Mode and beat all the opponents there without losing a single lives, then after successfully clearing that mode, Sonic and Tails will appear to challenge the player and if they defeat them will then unlock both at the player select screen. Many players had try and try but never seen the end result until they finally realize it was just a mere joke on EGM's part (similar to the Sheng Long trick in the original arcade Street Fighter II April Fool joke). The fake photos and the genius way of telling an April Fool to all gamers had made Super Smash Bros. all the more popular since after this fans had claim and petition for Sonic's appearance in a Super Smash Bros. game. This joke had finally being turn to reality here in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and this time it's no April Fool at least on Sonic's part, for Tails; however, is yet to come.
