Sega Zone: Sonic Resurrection?

How Will the Sega Zone Compete in a Gaming Enriched Environment?

If anyone remembers Sega, they most likely remember the insanely fast and stylish adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog. A once great competition of Nintendo's Mario, Sega once reigned supreme with it's 16-bit Genesis console. They even proved strong with a television channel dedicated solely to Genesis games, The Sega Channel. Yet, alas, the days of 2D super speed side scrolling, and killing zombies that ate your neighbors may be long gone, but nostalgia may return, along with a double-tailed fury sidekick and his blue counterpart with The Sega Zone.

Long out of the console game, Sega isn't above selling out for more money, and creating a system to link the generations together. The new console will be a plug and play device consisting of around 36 games. Twenty of these will be classics, while the other 16 games are going to harness the power of the "Wiimote-esque" controllers for some type of motion sensing technology.

Now far be it for me to say that this system will be good or bad, but the general public's past experience with plug & play systems, or systems that come out in a whim to try and rake in some money, have been (to say the least) poor. Does this mean Sega is going to have a difficult time selling the console, or promoting it?

At a price of around $60 dollars, they might. In an economy that is still working to get on the rise, will parents or classic gamers alike shell out the extra dough for the product? Especially with so many people emulating genesis games on the PC, or with a modded console.

It's hard to tell, but one thing is for sure: If the people want to take advantage of the motion sensing technology on the controller, they'll have to purchase the console. That, in itself, is not reason enough for people to buy the console, though. What kind of promotions will Sega have for the console? What kind of commercials? Well, according to release dates mentioned (or lack thereof in the US) we won't be seeing them around here for quite some time. In the UK, they should be able to pick this one up around summer of '10.

It's hard to tell if this console will provide any kind of newer motion technology, or if it's simply a way to bridge the gap between gaming generations, but one thing is for sure, with Nintendo's already increasingly popular demand of the Wii, Microsoft's Live cult following, or PS3's intense Bluray and graphics, it's unlikely that this wonderful little Sega invention will even see the light of day with sales figures.

  • A plug & play device that breathes life back into the classic Genesis.
  • New motion sensing device & games that correspond to it.
  • Older games to bring back the nostalgia of the Sega Genesis.
The Sega Zone will have a motion sensing technology, much like the wii mote, and 16 new games that each contain some sort of motion movement choreographed into them.
