Selecting a Baby Sitter

When it comes to parenting there are few tasks as important as choosing a baby sitter. Our children are ours to love and protect. So choosing a sitter must be done with a lot of thought and consideration. Naturally grandparents and other relatives are often the first we think of to leave with our precious little ones. But often times they may not be able, and you will need to select another sitter.

When selecting a sitter there are many avenues to explore. One is referral of friends. Do your friends have a trust worthy sitter, that could sit for you? You could also advertise. Either an ad in the newspaper, or post an advertisement at the local high school or college. Some child care agencies have evening hours. Many parents choose to trade off with babysitting each other's children. Which ever avenue you choose you must make sure the prospective sitter fits your criteria.

There are many important criteria that a sitter must meet, before entrusting our children to their care. The first thing every parent should do is a criminal background check on the potential sitter. Unfortunately there are many child predators that seek employment in child care.

Also has the sitter had any formal training. Such as CPR training and sitter classes, these are often offered at YMCA and community centers. Some personal characteristics you will want your sitter to display are: dependability, respectfulness, and a good reputation in the community.

You will also want to consider the sitter's age and maturity level. A fourteen year old sitter maybe okay with an eight year old, but not an infant. Also what actual experience does she have with child care. Has she watched siblings or relatives? During the interview see what kind of rep-ore she has with your kids. Are your children comfortable around the sitter and do their personalities mesh well?

Once you have found someone that meets all of your criteria, you will need to discuss terms of payment. You will first want to get an average of rates for sitters in your area from friends of family members. Then an hourly wage can be decided. After that set set your time frame like we will be leaving at six o'clock and returning at ten o'clock. Stick to your time frame, it would be disrespectful of you to push the return time.

Also inform the sitter of what you want done. For example supper at six, clean the dishes, bathe the kids, and bed time at eight. Tell the sitter the house hold rules and what to do if discipline is needed.

After following these steps you should be able to select a dependable sitter. Someone that you will feel comfortable about leaving with your children. And you will be able to go out and enjoy an evening on the town.
