Selecting a Home Security System

These days, with security in general at the front of everyone's mind, having a home security system is more important than ever before. While a good alarm might not save you from a terrorist attack, it can certainly give you peace of mind regarding bad guys on the home front.

Why you need a home security system

Do you go out and leave your home unattended at the same time each day? Do you usually come home at the same time? Do you have a set bedtime? Do you travel on a regular basis?

If you answered yes to any one of the above questions, you are in need of a home security system. Why? Because you have routine in your life and that is exactly what burglars are looking for? They don't want to get caught any more than you want them to break in, so they will watch to see when your house is most vulnerable.

The majority of break-ins occur while the owner is out and that is no coincidence! Expert burglars know exactly what they are doing and they will do their research so they know at what time the house is empty or when you go to sleep.

There are the rare home invaders that don't care if the inhabitants are home or not, and a home security system helps against these predators as well. In 2003, over 2.1 million homes were burglarized and a total of 3.5 billion dollars lost. Don't let your home be another statistic.

How does a home security system protect you?

Home security systems range from simple motion sensors placed on doors and windows that sound an alarm to full-on systems with cameras, sirens and remote emergency contacts.

In order to function properly, a home security system needs to focus on three areas.

1) Deterring would-be thieves. This is accomplished with motion-sensor lights that come on if anything moves within the perimeter. Having a system that alternates lights on and off within the house when no one is there is another deterrent.

2) Preventing entry. Locks on windows and doors, bars over windows and other easily entered areas or reinforced glass helps prevent thieves from getting into the house.

3) Alert when perimeter is breached. This would be the alarm and sirens that go off when a thief enters the house. The system can also be set up to call authorities if an unauthorized person enters the house.

How to install a home security system

A security service can install a complete home security system, but they will charge you a large quantity of money for the privilege. Some people prefer to buy the components and install their own security system.

The advantage of the DIY system is that you are also able to repair it if something goes wrong. Additional security measures can be added, like cameras and extra motion-sensor lights, depending on the owner's preferences, at any time.

The sheer flexibility of installing your own home security system is a great benefit and should not be overlooked.
